The Lowell Program in Economic Geology is pleased to announce that registration is opening for the 20th offering of our popular Short Course on Ore Deposit Types, which will take place from Tuesday, December 10, through Thursday, December 19, 2024. This year's theme is Porphyry, IOCG, and Alkalic Cu and Au deposits, which will be led by Mark Barton and Eric Seedorff. It will focus on exploration geology, including 3? days of lectures, two days of labs in Tucson, and 3? days of field trips to representative ore systems in Arizona. Topics include the distribution and geologic setting of porphyry, IOCG, and alkalic Cu-Au deposits, the character of related igneous systems, hydrothermal alteration and ore mineral assemblages, supergene processes, and structural aspects, pre-, syn-, and post-mineral processes, geochemistry of ore-forming systems, comparative geophysics and economics, and metallurgy. The Lowell Program in Economic Geology is pleased to announce that registration is opening for the 18th offering of our popular Short Course on Ore Deposits Mapping, which will take place from Thursday, August 29, through Saturday, September 7, 2024. As part of the University of Arizona’s advanced ore deposits curriculum,?Mark Barton,??Marta Code?o,?and?Dean Riley, with help from?Eric Seedorff,?will again be leading an extended field trip and mapping course through the Great Basin. Themes include the broader context of ore-forming systems and how to look at them in the field at multiple scales. It will be an opportunity to see ore deposits of various types and ages set in the context of the structural, magmatic, and fluid evolution of the region. The trip is designed for graduate students taking an advanced ore deposits class, but we will make approximately 25 seats available for members of industry and other professionals.? ?The trip will include a multi-day introduction to the “Anaconda-style” of detailed mapping as applied to multiple deposit types, with a focus on the Yerington district, Nevada. The district contains porphyry copper and skarn mineralization, but the mapping method is adaptable to any type of deposit. As part of this, we highlight how mapping can be used to understand zoning, the time-space evolution of mineralizing systems, and the relationships to the fundamental phase equilibria of hydrothermal alteration. The in-person short course will be held on April 12 to 13 at the?University of Arizona?Tucson campus. For the online course, we offer two options: an asynchronous, self-guided, and pre-recorded option and a synchronous option that will be live-streamed on April 12-13. Online participants are welcome to take advantage of both. The asynchronous online?will start on March 11, 2024 (midnight, MST). University of Arizona –?postdoctoral opportunities in critical minerals We are seeking two postdoctoral scholars to assist in a multi-year, fully funded research project on critical metals in copper mine tailings?https://lnkd.in/gU6wPrEw?. The project is highly interdisciplinary and involves geology, remote sensing, chemistry and chemical engineering, extractive metallurgy, environmental science/engineering, and related fields. The two postdocs will join a friendly and diverse team of researchers with access to cutting-edge analytical and experimental facilities and active collaborations with industry and government. Applicants should have completed a Ph.D. in a relevant field by August 2024 and be prepared for research both within that field and across disciplinary boundaries.
