The paper led by HAS alumnus Grey Nearing (on which HAS faculty member Hoshin Gupta is co-author), titled “What Role Does Hydrological Science Have in the Age of Machine Learning?” was just recognized with the “60th Anniversary of Water Resources Research Editor’s Choice Award”. It has been cited nearly 500 times in the 4 ? years since its publication in Nov 2020 Congratulations Grey & Hoshin!. https://lnkd.in/gF9dwHDh

Lead the world in integrated and quantitative hydrologic and atmospheric sciences and develop the knowledge needed.
关于我们
In January 2016, the Arizona Board of Regents approved the merger of the Department of Hydrology and Water Resources (HWR) and the Department of Atmospheric Sciences (ATMO) to create the Department of Hydrology and Atmospheric Sciences (HAS). The research and teaching portfolio of our newly evolved department reflects a new paradigm of integrated atmospheric and hydrologic science. We combine both the historical and existing strengths that have developed within both our departments to build a new foundation upon which to build future research and training needs. The Hydrology and Atmospheric Sciences Board of Advisors represents a core group of individuals drawn primarily from the external community and dedicated to assisting the University of Arizona's HAS in achieving its research and educational goals, and in stimulating interactions within academia and with the private sector so as to maintain the department's preeminence as one of the top-ranked departments in the College of Science and in the nation. Our vision is to lead the world in integrated and quantitative hydrologic and atmospheric sciences and to develop the knowledge needed to solve the water, hydrogeologic, weather, and climate-related problems in the world. Our mission is to build an integrated program that considers the fate and transport of water, energy, and chemical constituents throughout the atmosphere and geosphere. We will achieve this by: Eliminating disciplinary boundaries between the hydrologic and atmospheric sciences, leading to new approaches to characterize, monitor, and model the hydrosphere. Building a highly cross-disciplinary curriculum and collaborative research program extending from undergraduate students through senior faculty. Our goal is to lead a new approach to analysis and understanding of hydrogeologic processes that views the land-atmosphere interface as a new frontier of opportunities rather than a disciplinary barrier.

Congratulations to our very own Jack Flanigan (BS Hydrology & Atmospheric Sciences, Emphasis in Environmental Hydrology & Water Resources student), who was selected to be the Arizona Institute of Resilience's student of the month! Check out this wonderful piece written from an interview with Jack on why water resources and sustainability is so important to him. You rock! https://lnkd.in/g8iKUHVc

Yesterday the HAS Department helped co-host an Appreciation Potluck for our USGS and NWS friends and colleagues, with whom we have partnered for decades. The Tucson USGS and NWS offices have provided significant science education outreach for our students, as well as volunteer opportunities, internships, research opportunities, and of course employment as well. Much of our hydrology and atmospheric science research relies on the consistent, high-quality, impartial data they provide for the American public. As dedicated civil servants, the USGS and NWS help protect lives, property, and water supplies, and enhance the national economy. Please take time today to thank a civil servant for the important work they do, and for the oath they have all taken to uphold the Constitution of the United States of America.

#InterPore2025 Invited speaker Jennifer McIntosh University of Arizona,?USA Title:?Evolution of subsurface fluid-rock-microbial systems over geologic timescales Jennifer McIntosh is the Thomas Meixner Endowed Chair, Professor, University Distinguished Scholar, and Associate Department Head of Hydrology and Atmospheric Sciences at the University of Arizona (UA). She has published over 120 papers on the geochemistry of geochemistry of fresh to saline fluids to constrain sources, residence times, biogeochemical reactions, and flow paths of waters, solutes, and gases in the earth’s shallow crust. Our understanding of how complex subsurface porous and fractured rock, fluid, and microbe systems are coupled and have dynamically evolved over geologic time is limited. This talk will highlight recent work on the distribution of permeability and porosity at global scales and zoom in to regional- and pore-scale examples of how subsurface microbe-rock-fluid systems have… (full abstract). https://lnkd.in/g-cENS4b
