A team of volunteers from #USSteel's Granite City Works, led by the plant’s SteelSUSTAINABILITY employee resource group chapter, recently completed a roadway clean-up near the mill as part of Illinois Department of Transportation Adopt a Highway Program. In under five hours, the team collected more than 50 bags of trash and other large items! While #ClimateWeekNYC 2024 may be over, the work of addressing climate change continues year-round. #USSteel and members of our leadership team were once again active participants in Climate Week events, sharing our sustainability journey progress and plans. One of those leaders, Erika Chan, General Manager of Sustainability at U. S. The Northwest Indiana chapter of #USSteel's SERVE (Supporting and Enhancing Relationships of Veteran Employees) employee resource group, which represents our Gary Works and Midwest Plant, recently “served” up some fun for a great cause. The team hosted a fantastic cornhole tournament, bringing together 30 teams and their supporters to raise money for local veterans’ causes. Thank you to everyone who joined us and helped make a positive impact in our community!

“The training that I received from the U. S. Steel Fire Department gave me the confidence to act in the prompt manner that I did because I knew exactly what I had to do to help save a life.” That’s how Dan Kayich, a carpenter at #USSteel’s Granite City Works pictured here second from the right, described his reaction earlier this summer when he saved the life of his son’s little league teammate thanks to CPR and Heimlich maneuver training provided just days before at work for free. Dan noticed the child was choking during a team event at a local restaurant, and he sprang to action using his new skills. Dan was recently honored for his heroism with a Life-Saving Award by the U. S. Steel Granite City Works Emergency Services team during a ceremony at the plant. At U. S. Steel, Safety First is more than a slogan – it’s core to who we are. Training like the CPR/AED class taken by Dan is just one of the many ways we are helping our employees put Safety First on and off the job.

Members of #USSteel’s Legal team showed their ongoing support for The Pennsylvania Innocence Project (PaIP) by attending an event in Pittsburgh held to raise awareness and funds for the organization. In recent years, the U. S. Steel Legal team has contributed volunteer time and resources to support the organization’s efforts to exonerate innocent people of crimes they did not commit and prevent innocent people from being convicted.

Congratulations to Lenore Trammell, Chief Administrative Officer, General Counsel, and Chief Compliance Officer of #USSteel’s Big River Steel, on being named “Woman of the Year in Business” by the Women's Foundation of Arkansas! Lenore was honored at the Power of the Purse event in Little Rock, where she spoke about the importance of strong female role models and how leadership is defined by vision, capability, and integrity. The teams at #USSteel’s two Minnesota Ore Operations facilities have successfully completed year three of the Minnesota Department of Transportation’s “Adopt a Highway” program by hosting a clean-up event along U.S. Highway 169, which connects our Minntac and Keetac facilities on the Iron Range. This event, organized by our LEAD (Leveraging and Enhancing All Diversity) employee resource group, is a great example of how we’re not only committed to promoting sustainable steelmaking from our mines to our steel mills but also supporting the communities where we live and work. Thank you to the MN Ore team for your hard work and community spirit!

#USSteel President & CEO Dave Burritt expressed his continued optimism for our pending transaction with Nippon Steel during a keynote address at an AIST - Association for Iron & Steel Technology Pittsburgh Chapter event on Oct. 7. During his remarks, Dave explained why our proposed partnership with Nippon Steel Corporation is the #BestDealForUSSteel and how it will secure the future of steelmaking in the Steel City thanks to the technological and financial resources Nippon Steel can offer.
