We're aware that China is committed to dominating the legacy foundational semiconductor market.?It's great to hear about SkyWater Technology Foundry's acquisition of Infineon’s Fab 25 in Austin, Texas, which is one example of U.S. based efforts to expand domestic and more assured production capacity for critical chips in industrial, automotive, and defense applications. We must act now through policy updates and acquisition directives to ensure our investments don’t crumble. There won’t be a second chance. This move isn’t just about expansion as it’s about strengthening supply chain resilience and national security. In order to ensure success, we must direct the demand signal towards SkyWater and other assured sources and away from Chinese competitors.? The right location can make all the difference for a growing?manufacturing?business. But what factors truly set a region apart and how can economic cluster accelerators help firms scale faster and reach profitability? These are the key questions being tackled at Capital Factory in Austin this Saturday at 4:00 PM. Join Chris Peters?for an insightful discussion on?regional industry clusters and their impact on manufacturing success. This workshop is part of ATI | Advanced Technology International Harnessing Innovation for National Security?series. Don’t miss out, learn more and register here:?https://lnkd.in/g45WTMEf.
What sets a region apart in its ability to help firms succeed? How can an economic cluster accelerator help small #manufacturing firms achieve profitability faster? Join me at the Capital Factory in Austin on Saturday at 4:00 as I discuss these topics and more with Leah George VanScott and Richard Clinch. ATI | Advanced Technology International is sponsoring this workshop on Harnessing Innovation for National Security. https://lnkd.in/g45WTMEf

The Department of Defense has committed over $100 million to strengthening onshore PCB manufacturing, and we’re seeing real progress. TTM Technologies’?new manufacturing facility in New York?is one example. As demand for?ultra-high-density interconnect PCBs?grows, having a?trusted domestic source?is crucial, especially for defense applications. Strengthening this supply chain isn’t just about business, it’s about national security. At U.S. Partnership for Assured Electronics (USPAE), we’re committed to working with government and industry to drive demand for this critical infrastructure. The future of secure, domestic electronics manufacturing starts now.?https://bit.ly/3EZnvXe

The fight for dominance in semiconductor manufacturing isn’t just about cutting-edge chips, but it’s also about legacy nodes, too. In this battle, China is playing for keeps. While U.S. export controls have blocked China from advanced chips, the country has pivoted hard to mature process nodes, and now, it is pricing global competitors out of the market. ???China’s 28% share of mature chip production will grow to 39% by 2027 ???Mature node semiconductor manufacturers report layoffs ?? China’s “Big Fund” has raised?$95 billion?to support its chip industry With U.S. and European companies struggling to compete, we have to ask: Will we stand by as China takes control of the legacy semiconductor market, putting our national and economic security at risk, or take action to drive demand toward secure, reliable sources in the U.S. and Europe?? https://bit.ly/4iipvbn As a valued partner,?U.S. Partnership for Assured Electronics (USPAE)?is dedicated to working alongside industry and USG stakeholders to tackle this critical need.

SMIC just acknowledged what we’ve all been watching unfold: China is playing the long game in the state-of-the-practice semiconductor market. ??Massive government investments?in mature-node production ??Flood the market ??Wait for non-Chinese suppliers to shrink or exit ??Dominate the market?once competitors are gone China’s not just investing, they’re buying time.?And it's just not semiconductor, it's the whole supply chain from critical minerals to functional component.?If we don’t act soon to drive demand for more assured sources, China won’t just compete in the market. They’ll own it. While the U.S. and allied governments are building assured microelectronics infrastructure with industry, we’re ignoring a critical factor: demand. Without clear policies to drive demand for these domestic resources, the investments will fail. Meanwhile, China is accelerating toward self-sufficiency in semiconductor equipment. Export controls may slow them down, but technology proliferation is inevitable. We must act now through policy updates and acquisition directives—to ensure our investments don’t crumble. There won’t be a second chance. As a trusted partner,?U.S. Partnership for Assured Electronics (USPAE)?remains committed to collaborating with the industry and USG stakeholders to address this essential need.?https://bit.ly/412RNQ2
