The Board of Judges of the Northern District of New York is pleased to announce that Paul J. Evangelista has been selected to serve as a Magistrate Judge in the Albany Courthouse. He will fill the vacancy created by the retirement of Magistrate Judge Christian F. Hummel in January 2025. ? Mr. Evangelista is a 1991 graduate of the University of Rhode Island and earned his Juris Doctorate from Albany Law School in 1994. He was admitted to practice in the State of New York and in the Northern District of New York in 1995 and to the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit in 2002.?Currently, he serves as First Assistant with the U.S. Federal Public Defender’s Office for the Northern District of New York where he has successfully represented defendants in over 1,800 criminal cases.?Prior to this role, he was a partner with Ackerman Wachs and Finton, P.C.??Paul is a member and trustee of the Federal Court Bar Association for the Northern District of New York, the Albany County Bar Association,?the National Association of Criminal Defense Attorneys (NACDL) and is actively involved in court committee work, serving on the Criminal Justice Act Committee and the Criminal Practice Committee for the Northern District. ? The Board of Judges and court staff are delighted to welcome Paul Evangelista to the Northern District bench. His extensive experience and dedication as a Federal Public Defender have uniquely equipped him for the role of United States Magistrate Judge.
