The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Great Lakes and Ohio River Division toured the Canadian National Railway (CN) Ore Dock in #Duluth, #Minnesota during the final day, Thursday, of the Great Lakes Inspection Tour (GLINT). ??? During the visit, the 1,000-foot Indiana Harbor waited to be loaded with taconite pellets from the Iron Range in Minnesota. ?? For staff from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Chicago District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Buffalo District and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Detroit District, the tour served as a closer look at what drives industry on the Upper Great Lakes and hear what challenges they can assist with in their Great Lakes #Navigation mission to keep the federal channels connected to the global economy. ?? #USACE #GreatLakesNavigation #ShipsoftheGreatLakes ??: Brandon Hubbard See the full album of photos here: https://lnkd.in/gEt4Xv-9

Day 2 of the 2024 Great Lakes Inspection Tour (GLINT), hosted biennially by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Great Lakes and Ohio Rivers Division, focused on a day-long stakeholder meeting and bus tour Wednesday in Duluth, Minnesota. ?? The theme for the meeting “Beneficial Use of Dredging Material in the Great Lakes Region” addressed successes and ongoing challenges to finding positive outcomes for sediment. The Corps of Engineers has set a goal to used 70 percent of its dredging spoils for beneficial reuse nationwide by 2030. The goal requires additional testing, safeguards and cross-government problem-solving to find solutions in the Great Lakes where pollution from historic industrial eras still loom. ??? Among the highlights in those efforts is the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative (GLRI) where the Corps of Engineers is one of 16 federal agencies implementing between 75-125 restoration projects nationally each year. ?? The meeting was attended by stakeholders from the Cleveland-Cuyahoga County Port Authority; Duluth Seaway Port Authority; Lake Carriers Association; Minnesota Pollution Control Agency, Minnesota Department of Natural Resources; Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR); US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA); U.S. Geological Survey (USGS); U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS); and staff from the offices of Senator Amy Klobuchar and Representative Pete Stauber and Representative Tom Tiffany. ?? ??: Brandon Hubbard To see the full album of photos, visit https://flic.kr/ps/PfCtU

OHIO RIVER LOW WATER CONDITIONS UPDATE Due to near- or below-normal precipitation anticipated in September, the middle and lower Ohio Valley is forecasted to develop low water conditions from most of Ohio and Indiana southwestward to the Ohio/Mississippi Rivers' confluence. Beginning on August 15, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Great Lakes and Ohio River Division (LRD) Water Management team has been conducting low flow operations to minimize impacts felt by flow fluctuations along the Ohio River exacerbated by the low flow/drought conditions, and balance conditions along the Lower Ohio River as they pertain to navigation and hydropower demands. UPDATE: Continuing drought will likely bring Cairo stages down sharply on September 22 to below 7 feet. LRD Water Management will continue modeling conditions daily to provide forecasts at Cario. U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Louisville District has routine contracted dredging operations underway from Ohio River Mile 969 downstream to Olmsted Locks and Dam which are expected to continue until October 4. Upon completion, all dredging activities below Olmsted are anticipated to be fully addressed for the season and prepared to bring back if necessary. Currently, there have been no state requests for Public Law 84-99 drought assistance and no drought related Coast Guard navigation restrictions along the Ohio River. #Essayons #USACE

Our #BuffaloDistrict team from the Cleveland Resident Office met with the Cleveland Metroparks to give them a tour and details on the progress of the repairs to the Cleveland West Pier. The pier and a small portion of the east end of Wendy Park are closed to foot traffic during construction and utilized as a staging area for equipment and materials. Fencing and safety signage are in place to ensure public safety. Repairing the pier ensures safe navigation for vessels in addition, visitors and the Cleveland community continue to have this great place to walk and enjoy the waterfront. UPDATE: The remnants of Hurricane Francine are forecast to move into the Ohio and Mississippi confluence region by the weekend bringing widespread rain from southern Illinois/Indiana southward across the western half of Kentucky/Tennessee. The hydrologic response in the river is expected to be muted due to dry soil moisture conditions. No significant increase and or sustained increase in stage is expected at Cairo as much of the Ohio Valley remains in drought conditions and Upper Mississippi Valley flows continue to trend downward.? U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Louisville District has routine contracted dredging operations underway from Ohio River Mile 969 downstream to Olmsted Locks and Dam which are expected to continue until September 18. At that time, Louisville District will assess and determine where next to employ dredging based upon low flow conditions. Currently, there have been no state requests for Public Law 84-99 drought assistance and no drought related Coast Guard navigation restrictions along the Ohio River. #Essayons #USACE

The Cleveland Resident Office is continuing the upgrades both inside and out! In collaboration with Cleveland, Ohio based nonprofit organization LAND studio, Inc., the #BuffaloDistrict team in Cleveland selected an incredible artist to design a mural that provides a colorful design depicting the work of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the connection with the city of Cleveland. If you're in Cleveland near our neighbors at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, take a short walk towards the pier and checkout our latest addition! #ESSAYONS #USACE #LetUsTry US Army Corps of Engineers | U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Great Lakes and Ohio River Division
