Former Members of Congress (FMC)

FMC was pleased to host students from Penn State University in DC to help answer some of their most pressing questions on the economy, the impact of social media on elections and polarization, free speech, and more. Thank you to Former Member Phil English (R-PA, 1995-2009), FMC Senior Fellow Scully Steve, and our own Penn State alum, FMC CEO Peter Weichlein, for speaking with the group!

Last week, Former Members Barbara Comstock (R-VA, 2015-2019) and Dennis Cardoza (D-CA, 2003-2012) participated in a panel at the National Association of State Treasurers’ Annual Conference, where they discussed priorities of the 119th Congress and how states can best communicate their needs to the House and Senate. We’re always proud to see our Former Members share their expertise and insight with others!

FMC mourns the passing for Former Member Nina Lowey (D-NY, 1989-2021). Congresswoman Lowey was a pioneer for women in Congress, becoming the first woman to chair the powerful Appropriations Committee, and focused heavily on health and social causes. Our hearts go out to her loved ones during this difficult time.

FMC is saddened by the loss of Former Senator Alan Simpson (R-WY, 1979-1997). Simpson was a passionate advocate for bipartisan solutions and widely respected amongst his peers, serving as Senate Republican Whip for a decade. Our thoughts are with his family during this time.

FMC grieves the sudden loss of Rep. Raul Grijalva (D-AZ). He represented the people of Arizona for more than two decades, and focused much of his career on fighting to protect the environment for future generations. His leadership, experience, and passion will be deeply missed.

We were honored to welcome students with University of Southern California to DC for an at-home Congress to Campus conversation! Former Members Andy Levin and Tom Reed and FMC Senior Fellow Scully Steve spoke with the group on leadership and civic engagement, and answered questions about current events. Thank you to all who participated for the open and insightful dialogue!

Last night we were thrilled to welcome so many Former Members to a reception at our President Barbara Comstock’s home. We love creating opportunities for our Membership to catch up with old friends and meet new ones. Thank you to all who joined us, and to Congresswoman Comstock for hosting!

FMC was proud to partner with the Embassy of Spain for a dinner discussion earlier this week that focused on global affairs and the new Congress. Thank you to Ambassador Moreno for hosting such an intelligent and strong group of women at her residence!

FMC is shocked and saddened by the sudden loss of Congressman Sylvester Turner (D-TX). Turner dedicated his career to the people of Texas, and during his tenure as mayor of Houston guided the city through seven federally declared natural disasters. We grieve alongside his state and loved ones.

FMC is sorry to share the passing of Former Member Lincoln Diaz-Balart (R-FL, 1993-2011). Diaz-Balart served Florida passionately for decades, and helped co-found the Congressional Hispanic Leadership Institute alongside his brother. His leadership and dedication will be missed.
