Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service faculty and staff gathered from across the state to celebrate outstanding colleagues at the agency’s Superior Service Awards ceremony earlier this year in Bryan-College Station. Two of our own team members received honors: Audrey McCrary and Alexander Neal, both program specialists, were named Rising Stars, McCrary for 2023, and Neal for 2024. TWRI and Texas A&M AgriLife researchers recently published a nationwide systemic review of best management practices (BMPs) for nonpoint source pollutant reduction. Led by Michael Schramm and coauthored by Duncan Kikoyo, Ph.D., Shubham Jain, and Janelle Wright, the study showed that BMPs effectively reduced common pollutants, including fecal indicator bacteria and total nitrogen. Texas Well Owner Network was down in Jackson, Calhoun and Matagorda counties to provide well water sample screening and education. Sampling for contaminants like coliform bacteria, E. coli, nitrate-nitrogen and salinity, TWON helps local residents learn more about their wells and other groundwater issues. The Matagorda Education Program worked with local county extension agents and TWON to host the program in the Matagorda area as part of its efforts to bring educational workshops to Basin residents. For over 15 years, the Transboundary Aquifer Assessment Program has studied borderland aquifers below the U.S.-Mexico border in an effort to reach binational groundwater governance. With the first complete map of the shared aquifers created in 2023 by TWRI senior research specialist Rosario Sanchez, Ph.D., and her team, she and collaborators from other border states now use this research to further TAAP's goals. In research led by TWRI Research Specialist Edward Rhodes, researchers used historical images and records to compare how the Navasota River has changed over the course of 50 years and how that has potentially impacted those in the lower portion of the watershed.
