Maria Parsell has always put others first, but a prediabetic diagnosis forced her to prioritize herself as well. From her time as a police officer to caring for Alzheimer’s patients, her focus has always been on those around her—sometimes at the expense of her own well-being. In 2020, a wellness check revealed her blood sugar levels were in the prediabetic range. Realizing she needed to change her lifestyle, Parsell began to take steps to better health choices. After some initial struggles with her health journey, a neighbor introduced her to the Do Well, Be Well with Diabetes program. This program, based on the American Diabetes Association’s Standards of Care, provided her with a supportive community and practical tools. With this support, Parsell successfully returned her blood sugar levels to normal, preventing diabetes.
