Louise Blanchard Bethune (1856 - 1913) was the first woman in the United States to practice as a professional architect. She began her career in 1876, working as a draftsman. In 1881, she formed a partnership with her husband, marking the start of their own practice. Bethune designed over 150 buildings, including the renowned Hotel Lafayette in Buffalo. She made history as the first woman elected to the American Institute of Architects (AIA) in 1888 and became the first female Fellow (FAIA) in 1889. Her achievements helped pave the way for women in architecture during a time when the profession was entirely male. #womenshistorymonth #womenindesign #architecture #design #history

Today is March 25, the 57th work day of 2025. This represents how many ADDITIONAL days, on average, a woman must work to earn what a man earned LAST YEAR. The challenges grow even more complex for women of color, LGBTQ+ women, and women with disabilities, who face compounded structural and social inequities. For example, Black women must work an additional 134 days and Latina women an additional 189 days to earn the same salary as a white, non-Hispanic man. CLOSE THE GAP, ADVOCATE NOW! #EqualPayDay #womenshistorymonth #womenindesign #architecture #design #history

Aline Louchheim Saarinen (1914 - 1972) was a distinguished American art and architecture critic, author, and television journalist. She began her career as managing editor of Art News and later served as associate art editor at ‘The New York Times’. As an influential critic, publicist, and Head of Information Services at Eero Saarinen’s firm, she redefined how architects marketed themselves. Her editorial expertise and press strategies elevated Eero’s career, helping him gain fame for iconic projects like the Gateway Arch. Often overshadowed, her work as a strategist and partner was vital in pioneering modern architectural publicity and shaping architects' public relations. And yes, that's a boa constrictor. ?? #womenshistorymonth #womenindesign #architecture #design #history

A Finnish architect and designer, Aino Aalto (1894 - 1949) helped shape the world’s impression of Scandinavian design. She co-founded, alongside her husband Alvar, the design company Artek and served as its first artistic director. Aino contributed to architecture, furniture, textiles, and glassware, with her work displayed in prominent museums like MoMA. She was a key figure in blending modernist principles with traditional Finnish design, creating functional yet beautiful spaces. Aino’s legacy as a trailblazer in design continues to inspire, proving that her impact extended beyond her partnership with Alvar to shape the design world. #womenshistorymonth #womenindesign #architecture #design #history

Urmila Eulie Chowdhury was a trailblazing Indian architect, landscape architect, and writer who broke barriers in a male-dominated field. As one of Asia's first female architects, she was integral to the design of Chandigarh with Le Corbusier, as the only team member who spoke fluent French. Chowdhury became Chief Architect of Punjab & Haryana and Director of Delhi's School of Architecture. Her unique approach combined modernist principles with a deep respect for local culture and context. Through her work, she demonstrated that architecture is not only a profession but a powerful tool for social change and cultural expression. #womenshistorymonth #womenindesign #architecture #design #history

Two incredible architects in one family! Today, we celebrate Alberta Jeannette Cassell Butler, African American architect and children’s author. Along with her sister, Martha, she earned her architecture degree from Cornell University in 1948, becoming its second Black female graduate. Cassell worked for the U.S. Navy, including roles at the Naval Research Laboratory and the U.S. Naval Sea Systems Command. Even after retirement, she continued a creative life, pursuing photography and writing children's books. Cassell's posthumously published children's book, "The Little White Butterflies," reflects her creativity and commitment to inspiring young minds. #womenshistorymonth #womenindesign #architecture #design #history

We kick off Women’s History Month, highlighting Baltimore-born Martha Ann Cassell Thompson. She became the chief restoration architect for the Washington National Cathedral, working on the project from 1959 until her death. A graduate of Cornell University, she was one of the first African American women to earn a degree in architecture from the institution. Thompson also contributed to social services through the YWCA and was a talented pianist. Her daughter, Karen, continued the family legacy as a third-generation architect. #womenshistorymonth #womenindesign #architecture #design #history

‘Women’ is not a taboo word nor forbidden! In fact, in March, we are celebrating Women’s History Month by highlighting 10 amazing pioneering architects. Women who, often overshadowed by their male counterparts, nevertheless are recognized as some of the strongest voices of design. May they continue to inspire the next generation worldwide to pursue their dreams, speak out, and be heard. #womenshistorymonth #womenindesign #architecture #design #history
