“This is the best piece of new architecture along the New York waterfront right now, and, arguably, the most important... As a work of design, it’s the most compelling juxtaposition of old and new that the city has.”
It’s a great pleasure to have Paul Goldberger recognize the tremendous design work, building effort, and architectural results at the Domino Sugar Refinery in Williamsburg.?For those who have worked on complex adaptive reuse projects at this scale - they will appreciate the almost daily negotiations required to navigate between the old and new.?Ground up construction grants far greater control of the many building variables, while adaptive reuse projects often necessitate interpreting the architectural concept to be wedded with an imperfect and frequently stubborn historic structure in the field.?Plumb and level are mere fantasy.?This reality requires an architectural and engineering team, as well as the building trades, to be infinitely agile and adaptive throughout construction, with dimensioned plans and shop drawings often presenting best guesses.?The Refinery at Domino project is quite literally a ship in a bottle at the building scale – with 100% of interior demo and new construction needing to be lifted over its iconic walls or pulled through heavily constrained arched masonry openings at the base.?The one big difference here was that the ‘ship’ inside had the added demand of supporting the landmarked ‘bottle’ which surrounded it. https://lnkd.in/d5HU7n_G #twotreesmanagementco?#therefineryatdomino?#adaptivereuse?#dencityworks?#pau?#silman??#paulgoldberger #dominopark?#williamsburg #nyclpc?#dominosugarfactory #younginside #airmailweekly #nycrealestate #realestate
