Empowering the Next Generation In December 2023 and January 2024, we hosted two bright engineers from local universities, Liz Jonah and Simplicio Quiocho.They gained invaluable firsthand experience in power plant operations, from maintenance to business support functions. Plant Manager Darryl Kindt shared, “We plan to keep our internship program quite active as it contributes to the future of PNG.” ??? Bridging Knowledge Gaps In February 2024, non-technical members from our client’s legal, financial, and commercial teams visited the site. Their tour was both informative and eye-opening, reinforcing the importance of understanding the intricacies of power generation. ?? Inspiring Future Engineers On March 15, 2024, our site welcomed a group of 4th-year engineering students from PNG’s Technical College. They observed industry standards in instrumentation and gained a deeper understanding of plant operations. With transportation accounting for the second-largest share of greenhouse gases in the U.S., the push for zero-emission vehicles (ZEVs) has never been more urgent. ??The Challenge? Total cost of ownership (TCO) remains 30–50% higher for ZEVs compared to diesel-powered trucks. While fleet operators are eager to decarbonize, scalable adoption remains elusive due to cost barriers, charging infrastructure gaps, and operational complexities. ?? What Can Drive Adoption? ? Truck OEMs need to cut costs by optimizing battery packs, manufacturing efficiency, and supply chain integration. ? Fleet operators should shift from a simple plug-and-play approach to operational models optimized for ZEVs, including strategic route planning and increased utilization. ? Global GHG Emissions: Where Do We Stand? In 2023, global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions reached 57.1 gigatonnes (GtCO?e), with the power sector leading at 26% (15 GtCO?e), followed by transport (15%) and industry (11%). The figures underscore the urgency of energy transition strategies to curb emissions at scale. The UN Emissions Gap Report 2024 highlights key challenges: ??CO? emissions dropped just 1% in Q2 2024, and despite record-low coal use, power sector emissions remain stubbornly high. ?Solar and wind could cut emissions by 27% by 2030 and 38% by 2035, yet deployment is hindered by grid limitations. ??G20 nations, accounting for 75% of global emissions, remain off track on net-zero goals, with only nine having legally binding commitments. Energy Transition Investment Trends 2025 is out! Global energy transition investment surpassed $2 trillion for the first time in 2024, an 11% year-on-year increase. Key clean energy sectors—renewables, energy storage, power grids, and EVs—all set new records. Key Highlights: ? Asia-Pacific led with $1 trillion in investment, accounting for half of the global total. ? China alone invested $818 billion, exceeding the combined investment of the US, EU, and UK. Despite the strong headline figures, challenges remain: ?? Emerging clean energy sectors—hydrogen, carbon capture, industrial decarbonization, electrified heat, nuclear, and clean shipping—saw investment decline and made up only 7% of the total. Scaling these technologies remains a major challenge. ?? US investment was flat, and Europe declined, though both came off record-breaking years in 2023. Investment & Finance Trends: ?? $140 billion was invested in clean energy supply chains, surpassing net-zero alignment targets. ?? Climate-tech equity finance fell for the third year to $51 billion, but this was offset by a surge in debt issuance, which topped $1 trillion. ?? Bank financing for clean energy improved to a 0.89:1 ratio vs. fossil fuels in 2023, up from 0.74, but far from the 4:1 ratio needed to align with climate goals. The Road Ahead: To meet Paris Agreement targets, energy transition investment must average $5.5 trillion annually in the coming years. The gap remains significant, and urgent action is required. ??
