Tweed-New Haven Airport (HVN)

This week we hosted 250 students from Southern CT to our third annual Airport Open House at Tweed-New Haven Airport (HVN). This was the kickoff event to Avelo Airlines’ Aviation Career Exploration Program. The three- way partnership between Avelo, East Haven Public Schools and Scouting America is the first middle school program of its kind in the U.S. Up next, the students will fly to Washington to visit the National Air & Space Museum and National Transportation Board, travel to FL to fly a flight simulator before piloting a single-engine Piper aircraft. Thank you Michael J. Quiello, FRAeS for spearheading this life-changing program with me. Your efforts are creating limitless opportunities and unlocking barrier-shattering mindsets for these future aviators.

This morning, we hosted +200 East Haven and New Haven elementary, middle, and high schoolers at Tweed for our Exploring Aviation Open House with Avelo Airlines! Throughout the half-day event, students had the opportunity to: ? Get a behind-the-scenes tour of HVN. ? Explore a Next-Generation Boeing 737 jetliner. ? Meet with aviation professionals. ? Take an up-close look at an Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting (ARFF) truck and ground support equipment. Thank you to East Haven Public Schools, New Haven Public Schools, Momauguin Elementary School, the East Haven Aviation Explorers, and the Connecticut Yankee Council - Boy Scouts of America for visiting and helping us inspire the next generation of aviation and aerospace professionals!

Yesterday, we celebrated #HVN’s inaugural flight to Dallas Fort-Worth on Avelo Airlines! ?? From New Haven to the heart of Texas, flights will run Mondays and Fridays to Dallas Fort Worth International Airport (DFW).

Long Island-Connecticut Airways (LiCon) was the first airline to serve HVN. Beginning operations on November 10, 1933, LiCon connected New Haven to New York, Newark, Bridgeport, Providence, and Atlantic City. The airline offered both passenger and airmail services until 1934. Pictured: Gussy Tweed Hannan and pilot (circa 1933), disembarking from a Travel-Air 6000 — the aircraft that carried LiCon’s maiden flight to the then-New Haven Municipal Airport. Only 150 of these aircraft were ever made.
