In this episode on the TVC Podcast, we are excited to have on as our next guest, retired Marine Corps Major, Author and Founder of Gary and Dottie Capers Foundation, James Capers Jr. In 2008, Marine Major James Capers Jr. was recommended for the Medal of Honor for his actions in Vietnam 41 years earlier. His recommendation was downgraded two levels at the Pentagon. No explanation was ever given. James Capers Jr. is a true American hero and Force Recon Marine legend who participated in over 50 classified missions, was wounded 19 times in battle and is one of the most decorated African American servicemen to ever serve that includes receiving a battlefield commission. Missions included a POW rescue ordered by President Johnson, amphibious assaults in the DMZ, recovery of a B-57 rumored to have a nuclear bomb, and search and destroy patrols in Phu Loc. Major James Capers, Jr. was born on August 25, 1937, in Bishopville, South Carolina to a family of sharecroppers during the Jim Crowe era. Capers’ father had served time on a chain gang for a crime he did not commit and eventually fled to Baltimore with his family. The city was the backdrop for two life-changing moments, meeting the love of his life and future wife Dottie and enlisting in the Marines out of high school. This would be the start of a legendary career that broke barriers as one of the greatest U.S. Marines in history. During his service, he would be selected to join the elite Force Recon Marine unit where he excelled, breaking training records, participating in 64 long-range reconnaissance patrols and five major campaigns in Vietnam. He was a natural leader and father figure to Team Broadminded, a specialized group of Force Recon Marines. Capers and Team Broadminded were routinely selected to go on the most dangerous and clandestine missions in Vietnam. In the fall of 1967, still recovering from combat injuries, Major James Capers was selected to represent the U.S. Marines in a national recruiting campaign. With full integration completed only in 1960, Capers’ image became the Marine Corps most popular recruitment campaign. Capers currently resides in North Carolina and continues to be part of the special operations community. "I truly believe veterans are going to die" if they are denied shelter, Marine Corps Veteran Judge David Carter The VA is appealing a court order by Judge David O. Carter to begin building 750 units of temporary housing for homeless veterans immediately and 1,200 units of permanent housing by 2030. The VA held a ribbon-cutting ceremony recently to open new apartments for homeless veterans on the sprawling campus of the West Los Angeles VA Medical Center -- all while fighting a court order to build more units. At a Nov. 7 hearing, Carter challenged Justice Department lawyer Cody Knapp, who was representing the VA and HUD, on why the VA was appealing to block the move to house more homeless veterans. Carter rejected Knapp's argument that the VA lacked the funding to build the initial 100 units. Carter added that "you can't break the iceberg with a hundred modulars and you're claiming you don't have money. Is that really the legacy of this VA?" “You’ll never make it.” That’s what people told me when I decided to attend the Air Force Academy. “You’re too rebellious, too outspoken—you’ll last a week.” Challenge accepted. I’ve been breaking molds my whole life. After my dad died when I was 12, I started questioning everything—rules, norms, authority. Why sit in a classroom when I could just read the books myself? I struck a deal with my mom: If I kept a 4.0, I could skip school when I wanted. I graduated valedictorian. That rebellious streak stayed with me. As a freshman at the Academy, a local paper wrote: “Martha McSally is proof that even the most spirited of young people can keep their individuality alive in the restricted environment of a military academy.” Did I piss people off? Absolutely. Did I break the mold? You bet. Did I lead? Without question. As a cadet, I worked hard, performed well, and managed to have some fun, boosting morale for those around me. That “rebellious streak” made me a better leader over my 26-year career, including commanding men and women in combat. Here’s what I learned: The best teams don’t suppress individuality—they harness it. Leadership isn’t about “breaking people down” to fit a mold. It’s about directing and inspiring people to bring their unique strengths to a shared mission. In business or combat, the greatest teams are made up of individuals operating in their zones of genius—working together to achieve something bigger than themselves.
