Cain Velasquez is a father, a protector, and a man who acted out of the deepest love any parent can have for their child. While no one condones taking justice into their own hands, it’s impossible to ignore the pain and rage that any loving father would feel in his situation. The justice system too often fails the most vulnerable, and Cain reacted with the raw emotion of a parent whose child was harmed, a reaction that many parents can understand, even if they wouldn’t take the same path. Cain has always been known for his strength, dedication, and heart, both inside and outside the cage. This situation does not define him; rather, it speaks to the undeniable love he has for his family. He made a mistake, but that mistake was born from love, from a place of pain that no parent should ever have to endure. Instead of vilifying him, we should recognize the failure of the system that put him in this position in the first place. He deserves compassion, understanding, and a fair chance to move forward. Cain Velasquez is not a criminal in the way the world often sees them, he is a father who snapped in the face of unimaginable pain. Many may not agree with his actions, but most can understand his heart. Stay strong, Cain. You have a world of support behind you.

The Marine Corps has a well-deserved special place in the hearts of Congress and the American people—a sentiment that can defy the logic of Navy force planning, and the intentions of any administration to prioritize the nation’s defense requirements. The Marines—thanks to Congress—have a big vote in Navy force planning. Short of the Marine Corps becoming an independent armed service outside the Department of the Navy, the Navy, as best as it can, just has to live with a pertinacious Marine Corps — or it can borrow a page from the Marine Corps’ playbook. As a 100% disabled veteran with myriad mental and physical issues related to my time in service, going to the VA for help 31 years after I got out of the service was one of the best decisions I've ever made. They got me, they were accustomed to serving the special needs of people like me, and being in an environment surrounded by other people who made sacrifices for their country has a healing effect that cannot be duplicated in any other setting than a VA hospital. The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs might not be perfect, but it's ours, and it's a promise kept. Let's keep it that way. And let's keep making it better. Farming us out to private companies paves the way for a lower standard of care for our special and complex needs, and opens the door for unscrupulous business people to siphon off profits that should be money going towards our care. There's another danger that most people don't know about. When a veteran gets pawned off to a private for-profit health system, we have to not only become patient, but also legal and financial advocate. We get hit with bills that we shouldn't get, and a ton of red tape that can lead to delays or denials of care. I've experienced it. My friends have experienced. It's frustrating, and it's not what we were promised. Do not let them gut the VA! Do not let them break another promise made to us veterans! https://lnkd.in/eNWgfvN3
