As of the current IUCN 2021 Red List, 171 turtle species of the 274 species red-listed, or 62.4%, are officially regarded as globally Threatened. We are pleased to announce Hery Lova Razafimamonjiraibe in the new position of Country director for our Madagascar program! Hery comes to us from various experiences from international NGOs in Madagascar, and brings a background of experience in personnel and project management to this rapidly growing program. There are five endemic tortoise species in Madagascar, but the majority of our resources are dedicated to getting the many Radiated Tortoises under our care back on the landscape within community-managed forests or protected areas. Hery joining our team represents a first major step in this direction, and we look forward to seeing this program grow with the administrative skills that he brings to the table. Welcome, Hery!
