He ensures his crew participates in the Captain Mark Lee Toy Drive, delivery toys on their days off to schools throughout Jersey City, bringing joy to an endless number of students with disabilities.” Pictured with Buddy and his crew is Dwayne, a member of the community with intellectual disabilities and a lifelong Jersey City resident. “When Buddy first introduced Dwayne to his crew, there were things that Dwayne as well as the firefighters had to learn about each other. The crew realized that [he] just wanted to be friends, fit in, and be treated like one of the guys. Dwayne visits the firehouse regularly and will help sweep, take out garbage and even helps wash the fire truck. After everything is done, he joins the crew for dinner…Captain Hayes’ ultimate goal is to bring awareness to the rest of the JCFD when dealing with individuals with disabilities.”
