??Last week, Turrell Fund President of Programs Evan Delgado and Program Associate Dareen Abukwaik visited Children's Specialized Hospital to learn more about its early intervention programs to help NJ children and families. ??Children's Specialized Hospital (CSH) is part of the RWJ Barnabas Health System, a health system dedicated to building and sustain a healthier New Jersey. ??CSH provides the Scribbles to Script (STS) early intervention program, as well as Social Determinants of Health (SDOH) screenings to children and families. ??Through early intervention, CSH aims to identify families in need to provide them with necessary support. ??Turrell thanks the CSH for the comprehensive tour, as well as all the incredible work that is done for children and families. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services defines affordable child care as costing no more than 7% of a family's annual income—yet in New Jersey, many families pay more than twice that, with some of the lowest-paid families spending up to 30% of their income on care. Too often, child care is framed as a personal challenge, when in reality, it’s a policy failure. New Jersey families deserve better support. This week, NJ’s first Democratic and Republican gubernatorial primary debates offered candidates a platform to share their vision for solving the state’s child care crisis. While some Democratic candidates acknowledged the struggles of working parents, neither debate directly addressed child care solutions —leaving thousands of families without real answers. This was a missed opportunity for candidates to speak directly to the urgent challenges facing working parents and families in our state. Beyond being essential for families, affordable, high-quality child care is an economic necessity—helping parents stay in the workforce, strengthening businesses, and fueling economic growth. When families can access reliable care, employers retain talent, productivity increases, and communities thrive. As we approach this year’s elections, The First 1,000 Days Policy Coalition is committed to elevating child care as a top policy issue—ensuring that every candidate puts forward real, substantive solutions to fix this crisis. NJAEYC is committed to ensuring every child has access to high-quality early childhood education, while supporting the educators who shape our future. We’re gearing up for a?trip to Capitol Hill on February 25th?to advocate for policies that will drive meaningful change in early learning, including: * Increased funding for early childhood education programs * Fair wages and professional recognition for child care workers * Greater access to affordable child care for all families The economic importance of early learning cannot be overstated.?Investing in early childhood education?is one of the most effective ways to build a stronger, more equitable economy. Studies show the strong economic?returns in early learning, such as improved workforce participation, higher academic achievement, and reduced social costs over the long term. We are urging lawmakers to recognize that investing in our youngest learners is not just a moral imperative—it’s an economic one too.?The future of our economy depends on the quality of our children's education today. We’ll be meeting with members of Congress to ensure that early learning remains a top priority for policymakers. We are excited to share our voice alongside other advocates, educators, and parents in this critical work.
