Jared Marcotte, President of?The Turnout, spoke to the membership of the National Association of State Chief Administrators (NASCAorg) during the NASCA 2024 Institute in Louisville, Kentucky last week. ? Incorporating security into procurement decisions is paramount in today's world. From preventing data loss to mitigating ransomware risks, organizations must adopt proactive measures to safeguard their operations and reputations. Using Center for Internet Security's (CIS’s) Rapid Architecture-Based Election Technology Verification (RABET-V) in the elections arena as a case study, Jared spoke to the NASCA members about how incorporating a rapid, cost-effective security assessment in procurement processes can benefit both their agencies and technology providers. Agencies can use RABET-V to understand the maturity of the technology provider and the products they sell. Tech providers can rapidly test their products to get them to market faster while benefitting from the RABET-V recommendations on improving their cybersecurity posture. As more states adopt RABET-V as their product verification process, tech providers gain additional benefits, as a single RABET-V assessment would lower the costs of doing business in other states. Thank you, NASCA, for inviting us to participate with your members! It's been an excellent few days in Washington, DC for The Turnout, being part of - and helping to sponsor - the Election Verification Network's 2025 Annual Conference: "EVN25 - Walking the Tightrope: Improving Election Resilience Amidst Tension." Our team captured a few photos from from the conference. We especially want to direct your attention to the great team photo of The Turnout's Grace Gordon (Research Lead & Project Manager), John Dziur?aj (Research Lead & Project Manager), and Jared Marcotte (President). Just below that, you'll see a picture of EVN Conference Co-Chairs Grace Gordon and Matt Bernhard (Enhanced Voting), who did a superb job putting together this meeting and driving a robust, timely and interesting agenda! Bottom left is a shot of (L-R): Mike Garcia (Center for Internet Security (CIS)), Saige Draeger (Verified Voting Foundation), Aaron Wilson (Enhanced Voting), and Brian Glas (Cloud Security Partners / Union University) from their panel discussion on Verifying Non-Voting Election Technology. Mike Garcia served as moderator while the panel engaged in a lively discussion of the RABET-V model for verifying non-voting election technology from the perspectives of the program administrators, assessors, and technology providers who have piloted and gone through the program. (The Turnout works with CIS to support the RABET-V effort.) Rounding out this batch of photos is a candid of our very own John Dziur?aj just prior to the meeting's start on Wednesday, and a shot of Meagan Wolfe, the?Administrator of the Wisconsin Elections Commission - the state's Chief Election Official - as she presents. Megan is also a longtime member of the Working Group of the Overseas Voting Initiative (OVI), a collaboration of the Federal Voting Assistance Program (FVAP) and The Council of State Governments (CSG), a project that The Turnout has worked on for the last decade. We'll have more to share in the coming weeks about this event, and others we have supported and participated in during the first quarter of 2025. Thank you to all who presented, attended and organized and safe travels home!
