The Private Sector: It's a Game, not a Formula!

关于我们

TurningScience works with scientists to help them transition out of academia and be productive in the results-driven world of industry. Working in industry is very different than academic research, and the habits that we learned in an academic research environment are often counterproductive in a private-sector career. Therefore, we provide seminars, workshops, and personalized mentoring designed to teach scientists how to transition from academic research into successful and productive industry careers. We focus specifically on three career paths: (1) scientists working in the private sector as an employee in an existing technology company (2) scientist entrepreneurs working to commercialize a new technology in a startup, and (3) Academic scientists who would like to grow their research programs in new and exciting directions by collaborating with the private sector.

Have you seen statistics saying that around 50% of PhDs stay in academia? So have I, and I find it very frustrating. The studies that report these large percentages usually only track where PhDs take their first job. And since so many do a postdoc, but then move on to non-academic career paths after the postdoc, these studies miss the real story. But I maintain that the question of how many stay in academia to become a research professor like their advisor is ???????????? ?? ???????? ??????????????. The question of how many PhDs stay in academia is simply a matter of how many PhDs graduated by a professor are needed to replace them when they retire. That's it. Spending money on expensive studies is not needed to figure out that the wide majority of us end up in non-academic careers. People are often surprised that the answer is so straightforward. So, a few months ago I wrote a blog post to describe this approach in a bit more detail. And thank you for both Isabelle Kohler and Elena Hoffer, PhD for the inspiration to write this up! #academiatoindustry #phd #scientists

I'm a big proponent of ???????????????????????? ?????????????? ???????????????? ?????? ????????????????. Why? Because they: 1) facilitate the commercialization of important technologies, 2) provide new funding avenues for academic research, and 3) provide valuable industry exposure for PhD candidates and postdocs. The article below, shared by NaturalScience.Careers, is a great example of the value that an academic research group can bring to a company, resulting in all three of these benefits!

The value of collaborating between disciplines and sectors What can happen when academic researchers across multiple disciplines collaborate with industry to become highly innovative? Ruth Webster of the University of Cambridge received the AstraZeneca prize in synthetic chemistry. She developed iron-based catalysts that can be used at low loadings, significantly reducing waste in industrial processes. She worked with industry and researchers using DFT simulations and advanced analytical techniques. What can we learn from this? - Scientists need to collaborate ever more broadly to reach the frontiers of what′s known. This requires a broad understanding but also the skills to communicate with each other - Collaborations between academia and industry can be set up so that academics can publish their research and advance their academic careers. You can read this article published in Chemistry World about the work of Ruth Webster. If you′re interested in learning more about how academic researchers can collaborate with industry, you might be interested in our workshop "How to get research funding from industry," which we developed with David Giltner. https://lnkd.in/e85ezG9Q https://lnkd.in/eGSt3ThG #industrycollaboration #industryfunding

Early career faculty face many challenges, and securing research funding is perhaps the biggest. Excerpts from the article below that grabbed my attention: ‘???????? ?????? ???????? ????????????, ???????? ???????? 30% ???? ?????????????????? ?????????????????? ???????? ???????? ???? ?????? ???????? ???????? ????????????.’ ‘???????????? ????, ???? ?????????????????? ?????????????????? ???? ?????????????????? ???????????? ?????????????? ?????? ?????? ???????????????????? ???? ??????????????????, ??????????????????, ?????? ?????????????? ?????? 10 ???????????????? ???????????? ???????????? ???? ?????????????? ?????????? ???? ???????????? 2022 - ???? ?????? ?????????????? ??????????????.’ That's why many early career researchers are turning to building partnerships with industry as a way to build their research programs. And they find that the benefits of these partnerships go far beyond just more funding! I have some great examples of researchers who partner with companies to build their research funding profile. DM and I'm happy to share what I've learned. Thanks to Alex Lopatka for calling attention to this important issue. #industrycollaboration #researchfunding #earlycareerfaculty
