Did you know... The beard is a modified feather of bristly filaments that grows from an oval-shaped papilla which every turkey has. In the case of multi-bearded turkeys each one grows from a separate papilla. Most toms sport a beard as well as 1 in 10 hens. Hen beards tend to be short, wispy and often with a crease. Did you know...? Adult turkeys have big appetites. Their large-bodies require considerable amounts of food. Think of them as foodies of the bird world, adventuresome food samplers with regional and seasonal diet preferences that include about a hundred different diet items. Soft mast is an important fall food source. This hen flock gathered at the dogwood tree loaded with ripe berries. Some hens flew up to feed from the branches while others quickly nabbed the berries their flock mates made fall. Via Tes Jolly
