Did you know...? Adult turkeys have big appetites. Their large-bodies require considerable amounts of food. Think of them as foodies of the bird world, adventuresome food samplers with regional and seasonal diet preferences that include about a hundred different diet items. Soft mast is an important fall food source. This hen flock gathered at the dogwood tree loaded with ripe berries. Some hens flew up to feed from the branches while others quickly nabbed the berries their flock mates made fall. Via Tes Jolly

Did you know the folds in a tom’s white crown, or skull cap are unique to each bird, much like a human’s fingerprint. It’s often the first thing a hunter notices as a strutter approaches. The face, neck and caruncles may range from blue to bright red to flesh tone or white, changing colors in response to the bird’s mood. How do they do that? Wild turkey gobblers have the capacity to contract and relax small blood vessels in the head and neck skin causing color changes. Via Tes Jolly
