Did you know that a 2022 study showed only 31% of 8th graders were reading at or above grade level? The global economy loses $1.19T annually due to low literacy levels. While young people are reading far less books than their parents, they are simultaneously becoming more addicted to short form content like TikTok, Instagram Reels, and YouTube Shorts. At HackHarvard 24, My team (Mani Chadaga, Akshay Nambudiripad, Emily Y.) and I created a HookBook, a website that 1. Grabs 1000+ public domain short stories 2. Generates and presents the most interesting hook for each short story 3. Rewrites it to be read at an 8th grade level 4. Adds tactile interaction to the stories to keep readers engaged 5. Adds an AI assistant to quickly help confused readers learn 6. Questions users to check for reading comprehension 7. Rewards readers for finishing a story 8.
