Big news: Tumble just won the AAAS/Kavli Science Journalism Award for Children's Science News for the SECOND time! ?? The AAAS/Kavli Awards are among the most prestigious awards in science journalism. Our first win came in 2019, as the first podcast to receive the award in our category. This second award is a huge recognition of our team's unwavering commitment to high-quality science education for children, and a validation of our approach to telling stories of science discovery. The best thing? It's an episode about Taylor Swift. ?? Here's a quote from the judges that sums it up: "Patterson masterfully wove a pop-culture phenomenon into a real-life scientific exploration, and the bonus was including fans along the way.” Thank you to my co-awardees, Sara Robberson Lentz for masterful editing, Marshall Escamilla for excellent co-hosting and sound design, which put this episode over the top. Thanks to Elliot Hajjaj, our incredible production assistant who is leaving the Tumble nest soon, and Gary Calhoun James for consistently fantastic mixing and mastering. Shoutout to Lawyer Lindsay Bowen for spending a half hour with me to explain the fair use argument of using Taylor Swift concert recordings. And truly deep appreciation for Jackie Caplan-Auerbach, a scientist who was driven by all the things that make science such a fascinating process. She did an amazing job of communicating the curiosity, energy, and creativity behind science - and the understanding of why it's important to engage people in the process.
