Our CEO Lindsay Patterson was featured on this week's episode of the Kids Media Club podcast!
Here's the full episode of the Kids Media Club podcast about kids podcasts! One of the interesting things to come out of this conversation was a discussion of YouTube and kids podcasts. How do you approach the necessity of being on the biggest video platform when you're an audio-first medium? Listen to find out! (On Youtube AND audio podcast apps, of course. ?? ) Thanks again to Emily Horgan, Jo Redfern, and Andrew W. for having me and Carla Herbertson for such a wonderful discussion! #kidspodcasts #kidsmedia #youtubepodcasts

A few tips on crossover episodes from our recent collaboration with New Hampshire Public Radio's Outside/In. #podcasts #kids #scienceeducation #STEM #podcastproduction #audioproduction #kidspodcasts #cutecuddlyanimalfriends
What does it take to co-produce a crossover episode with another podcast? This was a question I had for years - and we finally did it! ?? Everyone says that crossover episodes are the strongest type of cross-promotion you can do to grow your podcast audience. To be clear, this is not: ?? A feed drop (putting another podcast's episode on your feed) ?? A guest spot (serving as an expert/ character within someone else's episode) ?? An ad swap (trading ads promoting each other's podcasts within an episode) A crossover episode is when two podcasts create one episode together, which is shared on both feeds. Here were my questions about it: ? Would it be more work than a "normal" episode? ? How do you divide the work between both podcasts? ? How do you ensure that the episode works for both podcasts? (Especially because I wanted to do a crossover from a kids show with a show targeted for adults.) I finally got up the courage to propose a crossover episode to Taylor Quimby, executive producer at Outside/In, one of my favorite podcasts. Taylor has produced many episodes and series that have inspired me (check out Patient Zero) - and I thought there could be a lot of crossover between parents in their audience and ours. Taylor said yes to my pitch and we got started plotting the episode! Here's what we figured out together: ? The timeline: We gave ourselves a very long lead time to accomodate work and production schedules on both teams. ? The division of labor: We split production tasks from research, scripting and production, but co-reported the story. ? The "crossover" question: We discussed where our podcasts were aligned in topic and style, and then integrated them through format, writing, and production elements. Each podcast added a custom intro and credits that eased the listeners into the collaboration, and gave some additional promotion to the other show. I'm super happy with how the episode turned out! It's called "Why Do Animals Play?" As Taylor says on the Outside/In version, it is like the producer's version of a playdate. Because even though the point was cross-promotion, the real reward is the friends we make along the way. Listen here to the two versions: ?? Tumble Science Podcast for Kids just won one of the most prestigious awards in science journalism - for the second time. Congratulations to our team!
Big news: Tumble just won the AAAS/Kavli Science Journalism Award for Children's Science News for the SECOND time! ?? The AAAS/Kavli Awards are among the most prestigious awards in science journalism. Our first win came in 2019, as the first podcast to receive the award in our category. This second award is a huge recognition of our team's unwavering commitment to high-quality science education for children, and a validation of our approach to telling stories of science discovery. The best thing? It's an episode about Taylor Swift. ?? Here's a quote from the judges that sums it up: "Patterson masterfully wove a pop-culture phenomenon into a real-life scientific exploration, and the bonus was including fans along the way.” Thank you to my co-awardees, Sara Robberson Lentz for masterful editing, Marshall Escamilla for excellent co-hosting and sound design, which put this episode over the top. Thanks to Elliot Hajjaj, our incredible production assistant who is leaving the Tumble nest soon, and Gary Calhoun James for consistently fantastic mixing and mastering. Shoutout to Lawyer Lindsay Bowen for spending a half hour with me to explain the fair use argument of using Taylor Swift concert recordings. And truly deep appreciation for Jackie Caplan-Auerbach, a scientist who was driven by all the things that make science such a fascinating process. She did an amazing job of communicating the curiosity, energy, and creativity behind science - and the understanding of why it's important to engage people in the process.
