A Victory 40 Years in the Making!?????? Last night, history was made as the U.S. Senate passed the Social Security Fairness Act (H.R. 82) to repeal the Windfall Elimination Provision (WEP) and Government Pension Offset (GPO) with a strong bipartisan vote of 76-20, a monumental step toward justice for first responders, retirees, and public servants across the nation. This isn’t just another bill—it’s the result of a 40-year battle to correct a wrong that has impacted #firefighters, #policeofficers, #teachers, and so many others who dedicated their lives to public service. This fight could not have been won without the leadership of IAFF General President Edward Kelly. His tireless and unwavering commitment to this issue was instrumental in getting us to this historic moment. GP Kelly has been in the trenches 24/7, advocating relentlessly to ensure that the retirement security earned by firefighters and other public servants was finally granted. We are also incredibly proud and grateful to Oklahoma Senator Markwayne Mullin and Senator James Lankford for standing with us and voting in favor of this long-overdue reform. Their support reflects their dedication to the hardworking men and women who risk it all to serve their communities. Now, the bill moves to the President’s desk for a signature. After years of advocacy by your own very own members of Tulsa IAFF Local 176, traveling to DC, educating our elected leadership, fighting alongside our IAFF leadership, and supported by firefighters across the nation, this dream is now a reality. “Tulsa Firefighters Welcome Public Safety Commissioner Laurel Roberts to New Role Under Mayor Monroe Nichols Administration” Tulsa, OK – International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF) Local 176 is proud to welcome retired Tulsa Police Department Major Laurel Roberts as the City of Tulsa’s new Public Safety Commissioner under Mayor Monroe Nichols upcoming administration. Major Roberts brings nearly three decades of dedicated service in law enforcement, community engagement, and leadership to her new role overseeing Tulsa’s public safety operations. Matt Lay, President of Tulsa IAFF Local 176, expressed the union’s enthusiastic support for Commissioner Roberts, citing her deep understanding of public safety and her commitment to collaboration. “Laurel Roberts is a consummate professional with an outstanding track record in public service,” Lay said. “I’ve seen firsthand her dedication to fostering safe and thriving communities. Her leadership style is thoughtful, inclusive, and rooted in practical solutions that truly benefit the people of Tulsa.” As Public Safety Commissioner, Roberts will oversee initiatives designed to enhance coordination among Tulsa Fire Department, Police, and EMSA. Her decades of experience with the Tulsa Police Department, where she rose to the rank of Major, have prepared her to address the complex challenges of public safety in a growing city. “Commissioner Roberts understands the importance of ensuring our first responders have the tools, resources, and support they need to serve the public effectively,” Lay continued. “Her collaborative approach and ability to navigate complex situations make her the right leader at the right time for Tulsa’s public safety needs.” Roberts’ appointment aligns with Mayor Nichols’ commitment to prioritizing public safety, community trust, and resource modernization. What a great week interacting with so many ambassadors from our great City of Tulsa and State of Oklahoma. Exciting collaboration between City of Oklahoma City Mayor David Holt with OKC Firefighters President Cameron Weems, and incoming Tulsa Mayor-Elect Monroe Nichols. It was our pleasure at the Tulsa Fire Department to host the crew of the US Navy’s newest nuclear submarine under construction, the USS Oklahoma (SSN 802), on its namesake tour. It’s being led by Commander Aaron Stutzman and also staffed by Tulsa native, Petty Officer 2nd Class Ryan Weis. All smiles during the their stop at 104 feet in the air at our downtown Fire Station 4, watching an Oklahoma City Thunder Basketball game at Paycom Arena, then introductions to Senator James Lankford and his wife Cindy, followed by conversations with Governor Kevin Stitt this weekend to see Oklahoma State University Football in a shootout with Texas Tech. On this Indigenous Peoples’ Day, the men and women of the Tulsa Fire Department proudly honor the rich cultures and contributions of our tribal partners as relayed by Deputy Chief Bryan Warner (Cherokee Nation), Principal David Hill (The Muscogee Nation), and Congressional Speaker Pam Shaw (Osage Nation). Today was an incredible gathering and awe-inspiring parade filled with leaders, warriors, advocates, artists, dancers, singers, teachers and students. A true reminder of why we do what we do. As stewards of the community good, we recognize the deep connection Indigenous communities have to the land we serve and protect in Tulsa. Our Executive Board & Staff were honored to meet with International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF) General President Edward Kelly in #Tulsa this week. So great to hear everything that the #IAFF is doing to support the brave men and women of the Tulsa Fire Department along with more than 350,000 professional firefighters worldwide. President Kelly and his DC team of firefighter labor leaders, including Kevin O'Connor and Pat Morrison detailed their plan to support the expansion of the U.S. Department of Justice Public Safety Officer Benefit (#PSOB) Program to cover line-of-duty deaths (#LODD) due to occupational #cancer and the opening of a second IAFF Center of Excellence to assist members battling #mentalhealth challenges.
