“Tulsa Firefighters Welcome Public Safety Commissioner Laurel Roberts to New Role Under Mayor Monroe Nichols Administration”
Tulsa, OK – International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF) Local 176 is proud to welcome retired Tulsa Police Department Major Laurel Roberts as the City of Tulsa’s new Public Safety Commissioner under Mayor Monroe Nichols upcoming administration. Major Roberts brings nearly three decades of dedicated service in law enforcement, community engagement, and leadership to her new role overseeing Tulsa’s public safety operations.
Matt Lay, President of Tulsa IAFF Local 176, expressed the union’s enthusiastic support for Commissioner Roberts, citing her deep understanding of public safety and her commitment to collaboration.
“Laurel Roberts is a consummate professional with an outstanding track record in public service,” Lay said. “I’ve seen firsthand her dedication to fostering safe and thriving communities. Her leadership style is thoughtful, inclusive, and rooted in practical solutions that truly benefit the people of Tulsa.”
As Public Safety Commissioner, Roberts will oversee initiatives designed to enhance coordination among Tulsa Fire Department, Police, and EMSA. Her decades of experience with the Tulsa Police Department, where she rose to the rank of Major, have prepared her to address the complex challenges of public safety in a growing city.
“Commissioner Roberts understands the importance of ensuring our first responders have the tools, resources, and support they need to serve the public effectively,” Lay continued. “Her collaborative approach and ability to navigate complex situations make her the right leader at the right time for Tulsa’s public safety needs.”
Roberts’ appointment aligns with Mayor Nichols’ commitment to prioritizing public safety, community trust, and resource modernization. Local 176 looks forward to collaborating with her to strengthen partnerships among Tulsa’s emergency services and to advance shared goals, including enhanced training, improved response capabilities, and community engagement.
