Since its establishment in 1950, the Tulsa Health Department serves as the primary public health agency to more than 600,000 Tulsa County residents, including 13 municipalities and four unincorporated areas. The agency is one of two autonomous local health departments in Oklahoma, with statutory public health jurisdiction throughout Tulsa County and the City of Tulsa. THD’s mission is to improve the health and well-being of all Tulsa County residents, in order to make Tulsa County the healthiest county in the country. THD was among the first health departments in the U.S. to receive national accreditation through the Public Health Accreditation Board.

THD participated in the MLK Day Parade in downtown Tulsa, proudly honoring the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. by joining the community in this annual event. The parade celebrated Dr. King’s contributions to civil rights and social justice, with staff members and our mascots actively engaging in the festivities, showing unity and supporting the values of equality and inclusion.

Last week, we had the honor of celebrating the retirement of two long-term employees. On January 13, THD hosted a retirement reception for Reggie Ivey, honoring his nearly 29 years of service. Attended by family, colleagues and community leaders, Reggie received awards, including a plaque, proclamations and a Challenge Coin, with heartfelt tributes. Also, DeBrena Hilton, a Tulsa native with nearly 28 years in public health, starting as an inspector, she rose to Program Manager, transforming inspections with a risk-based approach and leading food safety initiatives. Her retirement celebration on January 17 included a cake and a new conference room named in her honor. We take great pride in the longevity of our employees, as it reflects the strong, supportive environment we strive to create. Many of our team members have been with us for years, even decades, which speaks to the satisfaction, loyalty, and growth opportunities within the organization.

The Tulsa Health Department’s substance abuse prevention program has partnered with the Coalition Against Prescription and Substance Abuse of Tulsa (CAPSAT) to distribute Harm Reduction Kits in Tulsa County. The kits include free essential resources designed to prevent overdose and substance misuse, such as Narcan, fentanyl test strips, xylazine test strips, medication disposal bags and medication lockboxes. In addition to the resources provided, the Tulsa Health Department is collaborating with Tulsa Public Schools to provide messages of encouragement and hope on cards created by elementary school students. As temperatures continue to fluctuate with below freezing overnight lows, the Tulsa Health Department (THD) would like to remind Tulsa County residents of the importance of safe and adequate heat for your home or apartment. Heaters must warm the living space to a minimum of 65°F. Space heaters are not considered a primary heat source and should only be used to supplement permanent heat sources. According to the International Property Maintenance Code Section 602.3, adequate and safe heat sources must be available to occupants of living spaces.
