Curing Type 1 Diabetes (T1D) is within reach — and it’s our responsibility to ensure research gets us there. ???? We are thrilled to highlight our long-term partner in this fight — Breakthrough T1D — an organization leading the charge on many fronts to ensure individuals with T1D have access to the care they need until we find a cure. Last week, March 1-4, 2025, at Breakthrough T1D’s Government Day, nearly 200 advocates took to Capitol Hill to push for the renewal of the Special Diabetes Program (SDP) — a program that has fueled groundbreaking research and life-changing advancements in T1D care. ??Congress is broadly supportive of renewing the SDP through the end of September, reinforcing the critical role this program plays in driving innovation for the T1D community. This would be HUGE and is an incredible testament to the strength and importance of working across the aisle to support all Americans, regardless of political affiliation. Rep. Kim Schrier, MD (D-WA), the only Member of Congress living with T1D, delivered an inspiring message about the power of advocacy and the critical need to renew SDP: ?? “As a doctor and a person with type 1 diabetes, I understand the challenges that come with managing this disease. That’s why I’ve worked hard in Congress to help others, including legislation to improve diabetes self-management training, enhance awareness and screening for T1D, and lower insulin costs for millions of Americans.” ?? A few months ago, after winning the world title for Team USA, Tullman Community Ventures shared my win on LinkedIn. This is how Nicholas Lubovich and I connected, where he reached out and invited me to come speak to their cohort. That simple connection led to something really meaningful. This past Tuesday, I met a group of ambitious, motivated, and hungry young men who are taking full advantage of the opportunity in front of them. I spoke with them about my journey. About betting on yourself, overcoming setbacks, and seizing the opportunities in front of you. Growing up on the South Side of Chicago, I know how important it is to invest in our communities and create real pathways for success. That’s why I appreciate organizations like Pullman Tech Workshop, and why I have so much respect for Tullman Community Ventures, which supports organizations making a tangible impact in Chicago’s workforce and economy. I’ve been fortunate to work with nonprofits across the city, and that mission is something I take seriously. Empowering communities and helping people realize their potential will always be a priority for me.
