On 4-5 March 2025, TULIPS had the pleasure of welcoming CINEA - European Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency for the annual project review. From providing work package updates and identifying synergies with EU projects like ALBATROS_EU, HERON project, and GOLIAT - Horizon Europe project, to showcasing circular initiatives from work package six with our partners at Excess Materials Exchange and Royal Schiphol Group during a Schiphol Airport tour, this visit served as a dynamic platform for exchanging ideas and driving forward progress! We’re excited to share that TULIPS has been recognised in the International Air Transport Association (IATA)'s newly released Concept of Operations (CONOPS), outlining the integration of hydrogen and battery-powered aircraft into aerodrome operations. ???? With these aircraft on the horizon, their introduction is expected to help the aviation industry hit the International Civil Aviation Organization's goal of Net Zero CO2 emissions by 2050. Given these advancements, the CONOPS outlines the regulatory adjustments required for successful ground operations that accommodate hydrogen and battery-powered aircraft from their arrival to turnaround and departure. ???? As part of this transformation, TULIPS' work on the unattended charging of electric aircraft has been highlighted in the CONOPS' list of references, demonstrating the ways we are doing our part to make aviation more sustainable! ???? ?? It has been a busy month for TULIPS partner Torino Airport and a momentous one for the TULIPS consortium, as our hydrogen GPU (hGPU) has officially been featured in the Italian Civil Aviation Authority (ENAC - Ente Nazionale per l'Aviazione Civile)'s national guidelines for hydrogen in airport logistics! ???????????? ?? ???????? ???????????????????? ENAC has recognized hGPUs as a viable, lower-emission alternative to conventional diesel-powered models. Highlighting our demonstrations at Schiphol and Turin airports, the guidelines emphasise hGPUs’ seamless integration into airport environments thanks to their similar dimensions to traditional GPU and ability to directly connect to existing airport power infrastructure. ???? ?? On 13 February 2025, Torino Airport’s COO, Lorenzo Gusman, joined some of Italy’s biggest aerospace stakeholders to discuss innovations, technologies, and methodologies for a sustainable future in aviation, including TULIPS initiatives at TRN. ???? ?????????????? ???????????????? ?????????? ???????????????? ?????????? ?????????????????????? Finally, as part of Regione Piemonte’s Clean Aviation Joint Undertaking, Torino Airport reinforced the strategic role of airports in industrial environmental strategy and highlighted the knowledge-sharing efforts TULIPS fosters between Oslo lufthavn, Hermes Airports Ltd, Royal Schiphol Group, and Torino Airport. Moreover, Torino Airport shared insights on the TULIPS Smart Energy Hub the airport developed with our partners at Politecnico di Torino. ?? TULIPS is proud to share a recent study by our key consortium partner Delft University of Technology! Authored by Srinath Mahesh and Simeon Calvert, it is the first comprehensive review of studies on landside transport sustainability at airports, addressing a critical but often overlooked component of airport emissions. The study examines net-zero and carbon neutral targets of major airports, taking a holistic approach that considers travel demand, infrastructure supply, and policy measures to inform policymakers and future research agendas. The solutions include increasing public transport appeal, expanding EV infrastructure, promoting zero-emission mobility, and exploring future technologies and fuels alongside autonomous transportation.??? ?? On 11 February 2025, Dynell GmbH presented the first operational hydrogen GPU to German airports and aviation regulators at the “AG Flughafen” climate-neutral airports meeting in Stuttgart. The AG Flughafen working group, led by NOW GmbH, comprises key representatives from German airports, airport associations, and research institutions. As a federal programme facilitator, NOW GmbH coordinates climate-friendly mobility and energy funding initiatives on behalf of the German Federal Ministry of Digital and Transport and the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action. ?? ?? During the meeting at Stuttgart Airport, more than 30 experts convened to present and discuss the progress and challenges in implementing zero-emission ground operations at German airports. Dynell’s hydrogen-powered GPU, developed as part of the TULIPS project, was introduced as a pioneering solution within the company’s broader portfolio of sustainable ground power equipment. Attendees gained insights into the product's technical specifications, technological maturity, and the significance of deploying the first operational unit of its kind. ???????? Discussions highlighted German airports’ awareness of the external factors required to operate hydrogen-powered ground support equipment, including the cost and current availability of green hydrogen. While some of the airports have already developed strategic plans for timely hydrogen integration, most currently prioritise battery-electric solutions. Yet, early adopters could benefit from the TULIPS hGPU’s eligibility for national funding programmes supporting Germany’s implementation of the EU Alternative Fuels Infrastructure Regulation (AFIR), facilitated by NOW GmbH. At this stage, funding could cover up to 70% of the costs for purchasing the equipment and developing related infrastructure. ???? At the EU level, additional financial support would be available through the Alternative Fuel Infrastructure Facility (AFIF). This week Europe's aviation sector calls on European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen to set out an Aviation Strategy that reflects the essential role aviation plays in Europe’s economy and global competitiveness. Already in 2021 leading institutions of the aviation sector aligned their committed to reducing aviation CO2 emissions and making flying more sustainable by outlining a long-term vision and solutions to reach net-zero CO2 emissions by 2050. The first "Destination 2050" report by the NLR - Netherlands Aerospace Centre and SEO Amsterdam Economics showed that actions from all stakeholders could cut CO2 emissions substantially. This includes tech improvements, the use of sustainable aviation fuels and economic measures. An updated roadmap to achieve this goal was now released (February 2025) calling for the European Commission to deliver an aviation strategy based on decarbonisation and competitiveness this year. It claims that acting today will ensure a strong, competitive and sustainable aviation industry for tomorrow. This strategy could also provide an accelerating tailwind for the uptake of the multiple innovation that the commission is currently funding in the different #Horizon_2020 and #Horizon_Europe projects on sustainable aviation including: TULIPS – Green Airports OLGA Project – hOListic & Green Airports ALIGHT Stargate - EU Green Deal GOLIAT - Horizon Europe project ALRIGH2T EU Project Some of the TULIPS demonstrators, like the hydrogen powered GPU or the tow tractor, will provide high TRL outputs (validated working prototypes) which will be technologically ready implemented in the short term. Their actual uptake, however, will strongly depend on the external conditions like the volume and price of hydrogen available to airports in Europe and to what extend suitable regulations for the use of hydrogen are in place.
