Mother | Founding Partner, Mother Ventures | Investing in a better future for moms, parents & families
A few weeks ago, I was invited to attend a brilliant gathering of female founders, hosted by Meta’s Nicola Mendelsohn CBE. Over the course of several hours, we heard from a range of extraordinary businesswomen, and I walked away feeling inspired and invigorated, and grateful for new friends and connections. As several powerhouse leaders shared their stories, what stood out to me was the golden thread of family that ran through almost all of these women’s entrepreneurial journeys. Candidly, I wouldn’t have noticed before becoming a mother myself - their talks were on fundraising, partnership strategy, AI, and more. But upon reflection, it’s undeniable: - Nicola Mendelsohn watched her mother devote herself to the family’s kosher catering business in North London, modeling the grit and ingenuity that would inform her own professional trajectory (note: her grandmother was also an entrepreneur – truly an impressive matriarchy!) - Sarah Paiji Yoo, CEO/Co-Founder of Blueland, spoke of her commitment to building a safer home and a cleaner world by reimagining the home goods category free from plastic, inspired by her motherhood journey - Tuckernuck CEO/Co-Founder Jocelyn Gailliot (a mom of five!) recounted how she stubbornly resisted a lot of typical start-up advice she was given in the early days of the business – focusing instead on powerful insights about the women in her family and friend groups who were her target audience - Angela Vranich, Co-Founder/CPO of Little Spoon, has built an amazing business directly focused on the needs of moms and families, strengthened by a spirit of collaboration and partnership These women are successful not in spite of their families, but because of them. Across their respective industries, they have translated important personal lessons to a professional context – bridging and blending the different spheres of their lives to extend their impact. Mother Ventures invests in companies making life better for moms and families – but moms and families are also inspiring better businesses. We’re excited to be at the center of this conversation. Thank you to the amazing women of Meta for organizing such a wonderful day and Claudine Cazian for the invitation.
