Back in Berlin after an insightful time at the Madrid AI Forum 2024, and I'm still reflecting on the conversations we had. This wasn’t just about AI as a buzzword—it was about its transformative potential and the urgency of applying it thoughtfully and ethically across the media landscape.?????? What stood out the most? Jaime García Cantero??? raised a critical point: the stories we tell about AI matter as much as the stories AI helps us tell. His session on AI in news coverage reminded us that as media professionals, we’re responsible for presenting balanced, informed perspectives—educating audiences without feeding into either fear or blind optimism. It’s a tricky line to walk, but it’s crucial. Daniel Godoy Mondragón ?? took us into the world of conversational search, showing how generative AI is fundamentally rethinking how people find and consume information. This shift from keyword search to interactive, natural conversations felt like a wake-up call—it’s not just about adapting to new tools; it’s about reimagining how we connect with our audiences on a human level. Marcus Husby ?? offered a blueprint for becoming an AI-first organization, not just through tools and processes but through a cultural shift. His examples of Schibsted’s AI integration across departments—from investigative journalism to celebrity news—proved that meaningful change requires buy-in at every level. What I’m taking away: 1. AI isn’t a silver bullet; it’s a partner. Success lies in how well we collaborate with it, not how much we rely on it. 2. The race isn’t just to implement AI but to do so in ways that build trust—with teams, audiences, and the wider public. 3. Media organizations that hesitate now will find themselves playing catch-up. The time for thoughtful action is yesterday. Madrid, as always, was inspiring—not just for its AI conversations but for its reminder that innovation isn’t about abandoning tradition.
