  • Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center unveiled a new name for a decades-old program recently. The Nadine and Tom Craddick Physician Assistant Studies Program honors Rep. Tom Craddick and his wife Nadine, who have been instrumental in starting and maintaining the program. During the 86th legislative session in 2019, Craddick helped secure $20 million in state funding that enabled the TTUHSC School of Health Professions Physician Assistant Studies Program to undertake a $30 million expansion completed in 2022. TTHSC President Lori Rice-Spearman, Ph.D., said these state-of-the-art spaces ensure the university is equipped to train the next generation of physician assistants in West Texas.

  • In 1994, the Journal of Biological Chemistry published a paper that for the first time described the cloning, sequencing and naming of the Steroidogenic Acute Regulatory (StAR) protein. The landmark research, conducted at the School of Medicine laboratory of Douglas Stocco, Ph.D., has been cited more than 1,400 times since that initial publication. Dr. Stocco, now a Professor Emeritus at TTUHSC, said a Special Edition for the 30th anniversary of the discovery of StAR will be published by the UK Journal of Endocrinology and Journal of Molecular Endocrinology to highlight the contribution that StAR has made to our understanding of the control of steroid hormone production in steroidogenic cells.

  • For more than 50 years, as a leading pioneer of preventive medicine and the “father of aerobics,” Kenneth H. Cooper, M.D., has revolutionized health and fitness worldwide. Similarly, #TTUHSC has long been dedicated to education, patient care and research. Recently, we officially welcomed The Cooper Institute as part of its organization with a special presentation and unveiling of its new name - the Kenneth H. Cooper Institute at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center. The Cooper Institute, the nonprofit partner of Cooper Aerobics, focuses on research and education to promote preventive medicine across all stages of life. The Cooper Clinic, also under the Cooper Aerobics brand, will remain a separate entity.

  • For most, preparing for a midnight-to-4 a.m. meeting is not part of the job description. To Afzal A. Siddiqui, PhD, such meetings are simply another stop along the decades-long path to deliver treatment — and hope — to approximately one billion people currently infected with or exposed to schistosomiasis. Born and raised in India, Siddiqui witnessed firsthand the impact parasitic diseases can have on a population. He followed in his family’s footsteps to find a solution.
