Touching on the tradeoff of globalization, he noted that in 1994 – when NAFTA was ratified – 98 percent of apparel in the U.S. was made in America vs. 2024 when 98 percent is made overseas. And an overproduction problem – with 30 percent of clothing manufactured never reaching the consumer –?is a huge issue that heavily impacts the planet, he said. The solution is local-for-local systems such as TS Designs’ DirttoShirt? model, where every part of the apparel-making process – starting with cotton – is done within a 600-mile radius of the company, he added. A message from Eric Henry, CEO of TS Designs: The stories and images emerging from western North Carolina are emotionally overwhelming, from the mudslides and flooding, to completely devastated homes and small businesses. The response from both the private and public sectors has been amazing, but there is still immediate work to be done to help families and individuals who are impacted without help. Scientists have identified the unmistakable fingerprint of climate change in the flooding that preceded and accompanied Hurricane Helene. Over the course of three days, enormous rainfall totals were recorded across more than 200 miles of the Appalachian Mountains, stretching from Georgia to Virginia. Warmer ocean waters are fueling stronger hurricanes and supplying them with significantly more power. Climate change must be addressed governmentally and worldwide. However, my concern lies in the long-term recovery of small businesses, since many may not have adequate or any flood insurance. I believe we need a program similar to the Payroll Protection Program (PPP) that was implemented during COVID—a forgivable loan program. While large corporations and big-box stores will eventually rebuild, I am deeply concerned that without swift action to support small businesses, the landscape of western North Carolina will be drastically altered. I encourage you to contact state and federal legislators to demand a forgivable loan program for those who will need it. TS Designs continues to think about our partners, friends, customers, and all of those who are affected by this devastation. Know that we are here to support you. We may not have the funds to donate big dollars to organizations, but we have packed boxes of 50 assorted t-shirts.
