Capital markets is a dynamic, complex industry, whose end product is digital not physical. AI is an experience derived from the output of the application of mathematics and computer science that delivers an “intelligent” action indecipherable and at least as effective as a human output, but at latencies and scale impossible for a human to match. Applied properly it can unlock massive operational leverage. Such techniques have been used in some areas of the industry to dramatic effect for years. With hindsight, it’s not so strange that the AI breakout story of 2025 so far came from a Chinese quantitative hedge fund. The upside for less specialised capital markets participants is immediate and real. As daily operations have exploded in complexity, the compound benefits of systems that revolve around process to transform the way an entity operates have exploded too! Productivity delivered via automation is AI 101 and processes cannot be automated if they are not encoded in software. Dynamic situations with multiple stakeholders require business rules, models and algorithms to be built into workflows. Online chat and retrieval-augmented generation lift the productivity of individuals but ultimately are limited to bilateral insights. True efficiency and optimisation comes from process loops rather than dashboard updates. Humans are always in that loop. As outputs are paired with actions and nuance, human judgement remains a part of the decision space. It is the code however that alerts the trader, risk manager or compliance officer to the event to which their judgement must be applied and, through automation, liberates them from the hundreds of other decisions unworthy of their time. Over time AI systems learn from this intervention and are able to enhance outputs and inform decisions. To orchestrate such a system, internal data sources must be complemented with the most important exogenous input, market data. In this industry it needs to be both complete and real time to allow transactional systems and events to update the state of the world with appropriate latency. More productive human agents, leveraging increasingly intelligent automated agents is the output. The inputs are: ? software enabled operational architectures to encode business logic ? real time data and calculation models ? technically open minded human agents and leadership With every action from such a system stored and logged over time, the data structures from which your AI experience can be unleashed becomes a reality.
