I'll admit when we scheduled Once's first ever Science of Reading webinar for tomorrow (11/21 7pm ET) I didn't expect that hundreds of people would register in a matter of days! ?? But I guess that speaks to how important we all know Connected Phonation is, and the degree to which it is under-emphasized in other curricula and training programs. High-Impact Tutoring Presence in Chile! ???? Yesterday, our Executive Director, Dr. Susanna Loeb, and Director of Strategic Advising, Kathy Dyer Bendheim, attended a seminar in Chile hosted by Universidad de los Andes (CL). The seminar centered on lessons learned and unresolved questions regarding efforts to close students' reading gaps. Dr. Susanna Loeb presented on the U.S. experience with High-Impact Tutoring, particularly its effectiveness in addressing reading gaps. In her presentation, Seminario: Cerrando Brechas en Lectura, she highlighted: ?? Why tutoring is outperforming other academic interventions. ?? The research shaping High-Impact Tutoring standards. ?? How schools are using innovative approaches to close learning gaps. ?? Success stories and the exciting progress in Chile! Dr. Susanna Loeb also participated in an insightful panel discussion with Carolina Melo Hurtado, Dean and Professor at Universidad de los Andes (CL), Pelusa Orellana, Dean and Professor at Universidad de los Andes (CL), Francisca Lewin, Executive Director of Fundación Conectado Aprendo, and Joaquín Walker Martínez, Executive Secretary of the Educational Reactivation Plan of Ministerio de Educación Chile - Mineduc. I have a piece in the Washington Post this AM arguing for more national leadership on education. It’s no secret that this election has not featured any K-12 education policy. But the reality is, national test scores - particularly for low-income kids - are behind where they were a decade ago. Today, the national clearinghouse reported an 8.5% drop in freshman enrollment in 4 year public colleges. There are a lot of ominous clouds in the sky. We need concerted national leadership over the remainder of the decade, with a focus on ensuring that student outcomes improve across the country. Otherwise, we genuinely will get to 2030 with fewer kids ready for college and careers than were ready in 2015. I named a few policy areas that are extremely popular - more than 70% of families support them - and have a strong track record of evidence -? high dosage tutoring, where Accelerate focuses time and resources; science of reading and ensuring all kids can read by 3rd grade; career pathways helping more students find middle class jobs. And there are more. These are not partisan ideas. But it all starts with a national call to action and a line in the sand: we cannot allow any state or any group of students to exit the decade with lower reading and math skills than they had before the pandemic. This should not be a controversial proposition. If the next administration is unwilling to focus on measurable, academic outcomes and is willing to just defer to the locals on results, then the rest of us will need to come together to build our own pressure campaign.
