Certified Nurses Day? occurs every March 19, the birthday of Dr. Margretta "Gretta" Madden Styles, RN, EdD, FAAN, one of the greatest leaders in the field of nursing certification. Dr. Styles architected the first comprehensive study of nurse credentialing in the 1970s. She then pioneered the development and implementation of standards and credentials for nurses. In the 1980s, she spearheaded the definitive work of the International Council of Nurses (ICN) on nursing regulation. A driving force behind the creation of the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), Dr. Styles advanced nurse certification services and programs across the US and abroad. On this day 1954, the United States detonated Castle Bravo at Bikini Atoll which was the largest thermonuclear device ever detonated by the U.S. With the device weighing 23,500 pounds, the blast was equivalent to 1,000 Hiroshimas (Little Boy) atomic bombs and vaporized 10 million tons of coral, sand and water. The people of Rongelap in the Marshall Islands were the most exposed to radioactive contamination. U.S. sailors observing the test and servicemen stationed on Rongerik Atoll along with 23 crew members of a Japanese fishing vessel were contaminated by the fallout. Traces of radioactive material were later found in Japan, India, and Australia, as well as in parts of Europe and the United States. The Coast Guard Reserve was established by the passage of the Coast Guard reserve and Auxiliary Act of February 19, 1941. More than 92% of the 214,000 personnel who served in the Coast Guard during World War II were Reservists, with an additional 125,000 personnel serving in the Temporary Reserve.
