The Trust for the National Mall is honored to take part in the Capitol Hill Restoration Soc’s 2024 Dick Wolf Memorial Lecture on Tuesday, November 19, 7 PM. The lecture is open to the public. Join Catherine Townsend, President and CEO, and Teresa Durkin, Executive Vice President of the Trust, to learn about the history of the Mall, the current challenges of its aging infrastructure and the Trust’s exciting restoration plans for the future in honor of America’s historic 250th anniversary, the US Semiquincentennial, coming in 2026. Inspired by America’s 250th, when the National Mall will be center stage for the grand national celebration, the Trust is at the forefront of critical restoration projects and inspiring civic learning and civic art programs to help visitors connect to the National Mall, our nation’s history and its future. Join us to learn about the planned rehabilitation of Constitution Gardens, built in 1976 for America’s Bicentennial, which is in need of critical ecological restoration and redesign to become a model urban park and central gathering space on the National Mall for education, recreation and reflection. Join the Trust and Capitol Hill Restoration to discuss these issues and learn more about the history and the future of the National Mall and ways you can get involved at the Hill Center, 921 Pennsylvania Ave. SE, on November 19. As fall takes its seasonal bow, spotlighting one of our fave fall spots on the National Mall! The German American Friendship Garden on the National Mall, first dedicated in 1984, was restored by the Trust for the National Mall in 2021 to ensure this iconic space in the shadow of the Washington Monument will thrive for generations. Thanks to the support of the German Embassy, Volkswagen Group of America and a group of leading German companies, this popular garden space -- with its newly restored marquee fountains, vibrant plantings and handsome pathways—really shines in fall. In the garden, you can find perennial flora, including autumnal blooms like Purple and White Asters, Yellow Rudbeckia (Black-Eyed Susans), Purple Coneflower (Echinacea), Yellow Solidago and a variety of Sedum. The fall garden also features stunning roses and ornamental grasses that show off form and texture as the majestic American Elms turn gold overhead. The Trust also leads the long-term care and maintenance of the garden. Our crew is out on the grounds every day, performing tasks like planting, weeding, and tuning the fountains, which light at night, for peak performance! Make sure to check out the garden while the fountains are still on for the season. To learn more about the garden and plan your visit, or find out how to support it, visit https://lnkd.in/d2bjvinN.?

The National Mall honors veterans and their service and sacrifice 365 days of the year. Veterans Day is a particularly reverential and meaningful day of community and gratitude. ?????????? On Monday, veterans, including World War II servicemembers, Honor Flights, veteran families, volunteers, students and visitors from around the world took part in special ceremonies across the National Mall at the memorials built to honor military service and sacrifice. Thank you to our many volunteers, many of whom are veterans themselves, who welcomed and educated visiting veterans and veteran families on the National Mall. This Veterans Day, nearly 40 of our Volunteers-in-Parks (VIP) Volunteers served for almost 200 hours at five special memorial sites. We also welcomed a special student group – an opportunity for the next generation to meet the Greatest Generation. Thank you to the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation Civics Bee finalists from across the nation who joined us at the World War II Memorial, where they gave a special welcome to an Honor Flight of Veterans, with personal thank you notes and cheers, and heard stories about their service in war theaters around the world. Today and every day, thank you veterans for your extraordinary service. Learn more and become a volunteer at https://lnkd.in/ePq9Tca. Photos courtesy of U.S. Chamber of Commerce.
