As the sun set on the Dwight D. Eisenhower Memorial last night, the Trust for the National Mall, the National Park Service and US Army Band "Pershing's Own" helped celebrate what would have been President and General Eisenhower’s 134th birthday. Special guest Susan Eisenhower—President Eisenhower’s granddaughter and a noted policy leader and author—delivered remarks about her grandfather’s legacy, hitting on themes of unity and peace. “The most moving thing to me about this Memorial is that Ike is not alone. There are so many other statues of famous presidents and figures in Washington standing all by themselves...I like this. This is the way my grandfather would have liked it. He was part of a team. He led the team but the team produced the result” -- Susan Eisenhower. The U.S. Army Band “Pershing’s Own” Brass Quintet performed a rousing set of songs that included classics from the Eisenhower era and some newer favorites...along with Happy Birthday! Yesterday we commemorated German-American Day! ??????????????? Yesterday and every day, the Trust for the National Mall celebrates its partnership with the National Park Service, the German Embassy in the USA and Volkswagen Group of America. In 2021, together with a host of additional German corporations, we restored, preserved and elevated the German-American Friendship Garden on the National Mall. Located along the historic axis between the White House Ellipse and the Washington Monument, the garden is a place to rest, reflect, play and learn. Today, we celebrate the friendship between nations and our continued partnership with the German Embassy to care for and activate this storied space for the next generation. With students back in class for the year, we’re reminded of the ways last fall’s inaugural Beyond Granite exhibition helped us learn in community. We welcomed many student groups, guiding them to experience the six dynamic art installations and the National Mall in new ways. Kids of all ages, families and adult learners saw America’s Front Yard as it had never been seen before, like stopping by Derrick Adams' “America’s Playground: DC” for a fun break while still engaging with local history. Visitors also relished the opportunity to hear from the artists themselves. Wendy Red Star, the artist behind “The Soil You See…” joined special guest Dr. Elizabeth Rule during a Beyond Granite convening?to share insights from Indigenous archives and sites of memory. And Tiffany Chung, artist of “For the Living,” hosted a panel discussion on the Mall about diasporic refugee and immigrant communities. The National Mall, a sacred space that symbolizes American democracy and freedom, also serves as a profound place for commemoration and reflection. Today we mark the 23rd anniversary of September 11th, a day etched deeply in our hearts and history. Today we remember the tragic events that took place 23 years ago. We honor the fallen, including the 184 lives lost when Flight 77 struck the Pentagon, and we pay tribute to the countless heroes who risked everything to save lives in Arlington, New York City and Shanksville, PA. #NeverForget the events of September 11, 2001. We honor the survivors, remember the fallen, and cherish the memory of those who made the ultimate sacrifice. The National Mall invites us to pause and reflect on the values that unite us and the heroes who inspire us every day, and the resilience and unity that define our nation. LOOK UP! Join us for Eisenhower Under the Stars! A night of astronomical fun! Did you know...President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed the law to establish NASA back in 1958?! Make plans to join us September 13, from 7:30-9:00 PM., at the Eisenhower Memorial, just off the #National Mall, for a night of stargazing and wonder, celebrating the historic advancements in space exploration made under the Eisenhower administration. On Friday the 13th,?under a bright, waxing gibbous moon, join our partners with leading astronomy organizations for a tour of the cosmos-- enjoy guided telescope observations, hands-on activities and telescope viewing, and news and info on the latest in space exploration.?The Trust is grateful to our partners, including the National Air and Space Museum, Smithsonian Institution, NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration, and more. Volunteers with the Trust and National Park Service will be on site to provide tours of the Memorial and its tapestry, sculpture and statuary. Come on out! It's going to be out of this world! 250 years ago today, #OTD, the First Continental Congress gathered for its inaugural meeting, and the movement for American independence was born. ? Sixteen of the delegates that attended the Continental Congress returned for the Second Continental Congress in 1776 and signed the Declaration of Independence. The Trust for the National Mall is honored to support the National Park Service in our shared work to restore the Memorial to the 56 Signers of the Declaration of Independence, which honors the brave individuals who signed their names and helped establish our nation's freedom.?You can visit the memorial on Signer’s Island in Constitution Gardens on the National Mall. ? As we head toward the Semiquincentennial -- the 250th anniversary of American independence coming in 2026 -- our work and mission with the National Park Service to restore and revitalize historic spaces and share stories takes on new and pressing meaning.
