Some personal news: I have a new gig! It has been a dream to be Senior Fellow with Trust-Based Philanthropy Project since I helped sunset The Whitman Institute in 2022. The fellowship invited me to step out of executive leadership and into strategic exploration, people-centered inquiry, and my favorite - the liminal space of imagination. Deep gratitude to Shaady Salehi being the most incredible collaborator, colleague, amigita, and the brilliant squad & SC of TBP: Rashanda Freeman Chantias Ford Danielle LaJoie Eddie Whitfield Dimple Abichandani Brenda S. Pamela Ross John Brothers Phil Li M. Gabriela Alcalde, MPH, DrPH. While the new gig is a baby step within the same effort, it is a big leap back into the saddle of co-executive leadership! I have the privilege of co-leading with Shaady Salehi in this next chapter, and I am humbled, gratified, thrilled. Preview our vision here: https://lnkd.in/dB3nFFuD. I am looking forward to the work of transforming philanthropy to center the communities bearing the brunt of escalating violence, racism, and tyranny in this critical moment, alongside so many sibling efforts. Let's do this with purpose, clarity, and joy! #trustbasedphilanthropy

?????? Five years ago, I was working with a visionary group of funders to launch the Trust-Based Philanthropy Project. Our goal was to spark shifts in grantmaking that would free up nonprofits to do the work they know best. I stepped up to lead the effort, with the support of an incredible steering committee. And then, we were hit by a global pandemic, soon followed by the murder of George Floyd, and a sectorwide reckoning around philanthropy's complicity in systemic racism and inequity. As funders grappled with these intersecting crises, many turned to the Trust-Based Philanthropy Project for tools and action steps. We responded with webinars, how-to guides, and peer exchanges addressing their most pressing questions. We grew our staff from one to seven -- a dream team of curious, passionate, dedicated individuals who helped us expand our learning and reach. Since then, we've remained continuously responsive and adaptive to sector trends, while thinking ahead about how to sustain momentum. We've been able to juggle all this with relative ease ... largely because of multi-year unrestricted funding ?? and trust-based relationships ?? ?? Recently we announced that we are staying in the game -- and evolving yet again. We want to make sure that our efforts aren't just a?blip in time, but rather a driving force in the sea change that is reshaping philanthropy. ?? Pia Infante and I will co-lead this new chapter together, building upon the groundbreaking work she and John Esterle started more than ten years ago. I couldn't be more thrilled. ?? A New Chapter for the Trust-Based Philanthropy Movement As we approach our 5-year anniversary, we are filled with immense gratitude and excitement. What started as a bold, radical dream is now transforming into a powerful movement... We’ve learned that when we lead with trust, we make space for communities to determine their own priorities and solutions. But to truly dismantle inequities, this approach must become standard practice—so that every funder, in every community, embraces relationships built on trust, transparency, collaboration, and shared power. The future of this work also means Pia Infante and Shaady Salehi will co-lead the new chapter - prioritizing that trust-based philanthropy doesn’t just live within one entity but is collectively held, shared, and carried forward by all of us. Join us in making this vision a reality - read the full story below! #TheFutureofPhilanthropyIsTrustBased

Trust-based philanthropy is much more than unrestricted grants and streamlined paperwork. At its core, the approach is about recognizing and addressing power imbalances in service of a healthier, more equitable, and more impactful #nonprofit sector. This requires a commitment to relationships based on transparency and mutual learning – both internally within our organizations and externally with grantee partners. In this #throwbackthursday recording Forefront (Illinois) examines #trustbasedphilanthropy beyond the most well-known grantmaking practices, revealing the importance of centering power-sharing and equity across every dimension of our work. ??
