Each month, the Harry S. Truman Presidential Library & Museum hosts “White Glove Wednesdays,” during which a member of the curatorial staff brings out a special artifact to show and discuss with museum guests. These pop-up events are held once a month, usually during the middle of the month, in our Mural Room at 11:00 a.m. Yesterday (March 19), Museum Registrar John Miller discussed President Truman's Derringer -- a Remington Model 95, double barrel, Caliber .41 Rimfire, manufactured by the Remington Arms Co., circa 1888-1910.?This firearm is nickel plated and fitted with original, hard rubber grips. It was found loaded in President Truman's overcoat two years after his death, when Library staff began accessioning items from his Library suite of offices. (Photo credit: Catherine You)

Happy #Pi Day! Speaking of a different type of "pie," the recipe below is for President Harry Truman's favorite, Buttermilk Pecan Pie. He was first served this delicious dessert while aboard the battleship USS Missouri and loved it so much that he asked for the recipe. Enjoy! Buttermilk Pecan Pie 1/2 cup butter 1 3/4 cups sugar 2 teaspoons vanilla 3 eggs 3 tablespoons flour 1/4 teaspoon salt 1 cup buttermilk 1 9-inch unbaked pie shell 1/2 cup chopped pecans 1. Preheat oven to 300°F. 2. Cream butter and sugar until light and fluffy, gradually beat in 1/2 cup sugar at a time. Blend in vanilla. 3. Add eggs, one at a time. Combine flour and salt; add a small amount at a time. Add buttermilk and beat to combine well. 4. Sprinkle pecans in the bottom of the pie crust; pour the buttermilk mixture over the pecans and bake for 1 hour 30 minutes at 300°F, or until the middle is set and the top is a deep golden brown. Serve warm.

Did you know that records from the National Archives were used to research and create the Netflix film and Academy Award nominee, The Six Triple Eight? The 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion, nicknamed the “Six Triple Eight,” was the only all-African-American battalion in the Women’s Army Corps and the only all-African-American, all-women battalion sent overseas during World War II. They were deployed for Great Britain on February 3, 1945, and tasked with ensuring over 7 million troops received their letters and packages from back home. Upon arrival, the battalion found poorly lit and insufficiently heated warehouses filled with a backlog of about 18 million packages and pieces of mail. With a deadline of six months, the women, led by Major Charity Adams, readied for the massive operation. Splitting into three shifts, they worked 24 hours a day, seven days a week. They created their own organizational system which allowed them to sort similar names by military serial numbers. More than 65,000 pieces of mail were handled each shift. Through hard work and dedication, the Six Triple Eight cleared the backlog of service member mail in Britain in only three months. In honor of International Women's Day (March 8), here's one of my favorite photos of Lena Horne, photographed with a group of Tuskegee Airmen. A fun fact: Lena Horne performed during President Harry Truman's Inauguration in January 1949.

This fully restored 1950 Lincoln Cosmopolitan Limousine was one of a fleet of cars specially designed by the Ford Motor Company for use by government officials during the Truman Administration. The pictured limousine was stationed in New Jersey for use in the New York City area. See it downstairs at the Harry S. Truman Presidential Library & Museum.?A fun fact: President Truman rode in a vehicle from this fleet during his meeting with Princess Elizabeth of England (who would later become Queen Elizabeth) during her visit to the United States in October 1951.
