Did you know? President Harry Truman loved Dixon's Chili. Read more about it here: https://lnkd.in/g7YQJQF7 (We may be a few weeks late celebrating National Chili Day (Feb. 27), but is it ever too late for a bowl of chili?)

Did you know that records from the National Archives were used to research and create the Netflix film and Academy Award nominee, The Six Triple Eight? The 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion, nicknamed the “Six Triple Eight,” was the only all-African-American battalion in the Women’s Army Corps and the only all-African-American, all-women battalion sent overseas during World War II. They were deployed for Great Britain on February 3, 1945, and tasked with ensuring over 7 million troops received their letters and packages from back home. Upon arrival, the battalion found poorly lit and insufficiently heated warehouses filled with a backlog of about 18 million packages and pieces of mail. With a deadline of six months, the women, led by Major Charity Adams, readied for the massive operation. Splitting into three shifts, they worked 24 hours a day, seven days a week. They created their own organizational system which allowed them to sort similar names by military serial numbers. More than 65,000 pieces of mail were handled each shift. Through hard work and dedication, the Six Triple Eight cleared the backlog of service member mail in Britain in only three months. To learn more about the Six Triple Eight, visit https://lnkd.in/gACqzcQc. The most recent edition of our Catalog e-newsletter also features the 6888th Central Post Battalion. In honor of International Women's Day (March 8), here's one of my favorite photos of Lena Horne, photographed with a group of Tuskegee Airmen. A fun fact: Lena Horne performed during President Harry Truman's Inauguration in January 1949.

This fully restored 1950 Lincoln Cosmopolitan Limousine was one of a fleet of cars specially designed by the Ford Motor Company for use by government officials during the Truman Administration. The pictured limousine was stationed in New Jersey for use in the New York City area. See it downstairs at the Harry S. Truman Presidential Library & Museum.?A fun fact: President Truman rode in a vehicle from this fleet during his meeting with Princess Elizabeth of England (who would later become Queen Elizabeth) during her visit to the United States in October 1951.

If the weather looked like this, the Harry S. Truman Presidential Library & Museum wouldn't be opening two hours late tomorrow (March 5). We'll be open at 11:00 a.m. Please stay safe!

Did you know? President Harry Truman's favorite film was "My Darling Clementine" (1946). Although it was not nominated for any Academy Awards, it is considered among the best films in the Western genre. Here's a wonderful review from Roger Ebert from 1997: https://lnkd.in/gpbc3Y9c.

When Harry Truman's father died in 1914, Harry took over management of the family's farm in Grandview (MO) and conducted an inventory of farm property. A stamped plate under the seat of this buggy indicates it was part of that inventory. A separate ledger book records the purchase of a buggy for $6.00 in 1914. This is most likely the buggy noted in that purchase. For those who are curious, $6.00 in 1914 amounts to just over $188 today, so it would have still been a bargain! See this buggy in person on the lower level of the Harry S. Truman Presidential Library & Museum.

Due to forecasted winter weather conditions, the Harry S. Truman Presidential Library & Museum will be closed tomorrow (Feb. 18). Stay safe and warm! Did you know? In President Truman's early years, he managed his family's 600-acre farm. The Trumans raised horses, mules, chickens, cattle, and hogs.
