While much of the attention in the coming days will be on the wintry and severe weather produced by two separate low-pressure systems, another significant hazard will be present across the South Central. Through Saturday evening, wind gusts exceeding 50 mph will be widespread across parts of eastern Arizona, New Mexico, and west Texas. The strongest winds are expected from late Thursday through Friday, with some areas potentially experiencing hurricane-force gusts. This is especially concerning for southeastern Arizona, southern New Mexico, and west Texas, where exceptional drought conditions worsen. The combination of powerful winds and extremely dry terrain will create a high risk of fast-moving wildfires. All told, this will produce widespread rainfall amounts of 2-5" with locally higher amounts upwards of 6" possible from the coastline to the Cascades and the Sierra Nevadas. Rainfall amounts of this magnitude over such a short period will undoubtedly lead to flooding, flash flooding, landslides, and mudslides in some areas. For most, this will be a minor nuisance, with snowfall totals generally around 1" or less and only a small portion of the affected locations seeing snow accumulate on paved surfaces. However, Clarion, Pennsylvania stands out as an exception with this area expected to receive more than an inch of snow, much of which will stick to roadways and other paved surfaces.
