State of the product job market: 1. There’s indeed a shift to hiring more senior PMs 2. Remote PM jobs are shrinking fast (down 35% from peak, and still shrinking) 3. More than one in five open PM roles is based in the San Francisco Bay Area (and still growing) 4. Bengaluru, India, is now the most popular location outside the U.S. for PM roles 5. The three most common hard skills that hiring managers are looking for from PMs are SQL, Jira, and experience with LLMs 6. The fastest-shrinking roles right now are diversity and scrum masters 7. Machine-learning engineers and data engineers are the most in-demand tech functions right now This analysis is based on exclusive data from two companies that I’m partnering with: 1. TrueUp, which tracks?new?job?openings?across all tech companies globally 2. The design job market is slowly bouncing back. In 2022 the number of open design roles dropped by 40% and by an additional 10% in 2023. So in a year, we lost half of the open design roles. TrueUp scans open jobs in real-time, so I asked them to provide me with data on how 2024 looked like for design roles. With cautious optimism, I can say that 2024 shows a slow, steady recovery throughout the year. The same trend happens for other tech jobs, but it's good to see that designers aren't left behind. Let's hope that this trend will continue also in 2025 ?? I'll share the data on what design titles are most in demand next week.

Market is recovering:

The San Francisco Bay Area is ascendant. A fifth of all open product manager job listings are currently based in the Bay Area. The share has increased 25% over the past two years (from 15% to over 20%) and is still growing. This index is looking at roles at "tech" companies globally, and I'll be tracking this index over time. Big thank you to TrueUp for providing this data.
