?? Reflections from the California Council for the Social Studies Conference I just got back from the California Council for the Social Studies (CCSS) Conference, and I’m feeling energized! Connecting with educators, administrators, and advocates for history and social studies education reinforced the need for engaging, classroom-ready resources that make history more accessible, inclusive, and interactive. What Educators Told Me ? Teachers Loved Our Catalog of Resources – Many saw how our materials could be used for U.S. history and ethnic studies, with content designed specifically for the classroom and representative of multiple identities. Several teachers shared that they were excited to discover historical narratives they had never heard of, giving them fresh perspectives to share with their students. ? TrueFiktion Resonated with Educators and Students – Teachers and students loved our content! Educators said our narratives sparked curiosity, discussion, and deeper engagement, making history feel alive and relevant in ways traditional materials don’t always achieve. ? Teachers Loved the Art – The visuals in our comics stood out as a major strength. Many teachers mentioned that neurodivergent learners found the structured storytelling and systems-based approach especially valuable. ? Newcomer and Bilingual Students Need More Resources – There was strong interest in history content that supports English learners through embodied cognition, helping students engage with material in interactive ways. ? Print Over Digital for Classroom Use – Educators stressed that digital versions can be distracting, making it harder for students to focus. Physical class sets were a clear preference, as they encourage peer-to-peer engagement, ownership, and hands-on learning. The Takeaway The CCSS Conference reaffirmed that educators are looking for engaging, culturally responsive, multimodal content to help students connect with history. There’s a growing demand for physical resources, localized history, and hands-on learning experiences that give students a sense of ownership over their education. As we continue refining our approach, I’m more excited than ever about the impact we can have in classrooms. If you’re an educator, what are the biggest challenges you face when teaching history? Let’s start a conversation! #SocialStudies #Education #EthnicStudies #MultimodalLearning #HistoryEducation #ComicsInTheClassroom #CulturallyResponsiveTeaching #NewcomerEducation
