    Andrew Ng respectfully disagree! Many more 10x software engineers exist because the financial market opportunity in software is bigger, disruptive and can be captured faster. Of course, we are seeing that AI can make the 10x engineer have a 100x impact if that person also has the hunger hustle and humility of being a successful entrepreneur! Look at this differently. Do you feel you are 10x more productive than before you had the iPhone/android mobile phone browser, and all the cloud apps anytime anywhere? Or 10x more before you had the Internet? AI will 10x the productivity of all workers who choose to apply AI. Thats not the 10x inherent factor of a smarter professional who applies them better. Marketeers, Financial Analysts, others who were 10x more impactful than their peers can continue to be so once they adopt the use and application of AI. There is a time to market advantage of those who learn AI tools faster and apply it better. AI will be disruptive and the true window is for 100x entrepreneurs who can build applications of AI that the world loves!     A “10x engineer” — a widely accepted concept in tech — purportedly has 10 times the impact of the average engineer. But we don’t seem to talk about 10x marketers, 10x recruiters, or 10x financial analysts. As more jobs become AI enabled, I think this will change, and there will be a lot more “10x professionals.” There aren’t already more 10x professionals because, in many roles, the gap between the best and the average worker has a ceiling. No matter how athletic a supermarket checkout clerk is, they’re not likely to scan groceries so fast that customers get out of the store 10x faster. Similarly, even the best doctor is unlikely to make patients heal 10x faster than an average one (but to a sick patient, even a small difference is worth a lot). In many jobs, the laws of physics place a limit on what any human or AI can do (unless we completely reimagine that job). But for many jobs that primarily involve applying knowledge or processing information, AI will be transformative. In a few roles, I’m starting to see tech-savvy individuals coordinate a suite of technology tools to do things differently and start to have, if not yet 10x impact, then easily 2x impact. I expect this gap to grow. 10x engineers don’t write code 10 times faster. Instead, they make technical architecture decisions that result in dramatically better downstream impact, they spot problems and prioritize tasks more effectively, and instead of rewriting 10,000 lines of code (or labeling 10,000 training examples) they might figure out how to write just 100 lines (or collect 100 examples) to get the job done. I think 10x marketers, recruiters, and analysts will, similarly, do things differently. For example, perhaps traditional marketers repeatedly write social media posts. 10x marketers might use AI to help write, but the transformation will go deeper than that. If they are deeply sophisticated in how to apply AI — ideally able to write code themselves to test ideas, automate tasks, or analyze data — they might end up running a lot more experiments, get better insights about what customers want, and generate much more precise or personalized messages than a traditional marketer, and thereby end up making 10x impact. Similarly, 10x recruiters won’t just use generative AI to help write emails to candidates or summarize interviews. (This level of use of prompting-based AI will soon become table stakes for many knowledge roles.) They might coordinate a suite of AI tools to identify and carry out research on a large set of candidates, enabling them to have dramatically greater impact than the average recruiter. And 10x analysts won’t just use generative AI to edit their reports. They might write code to orchestrate a suite of AI agents to do deep research into the products, markets, and companies, and thereby derive far more valuable conclusions than someone who does research the traditional way.     One of my brilliant founders has been struggling with scaling the business. Customers are stuck in procurement and not converting. This founder came to me and was really upset, saying, "am I just a terrible sales person?" Definitely not. This founder is smart, charismatic, and likable. But the experience of this founder is normal: blaming the "tip of the spear" sales person for slow sales, in this case the founder/CEO. The founder and I sat down and started debugging the problem with a framework taught to me by Douglas Leone, which he calls The Merchandise Cycle. When something isn't going well in an enterprise software company, for example growth is too slow, most people say "it must be sales." In reality, that is the output of many input layers. Consider the diagram below and start in the upper right where the arrow says "start here." So sales aren't booming. The gut reaction of most founders and board members is simple: blame sales. But first ask: Why are we not selling new business efficiently? What are our most and least efficient types of customers? Why can’t we sell more to the efficient customer type? Maybe it is something in the sales org. But maybe it is an issue of leads, and if that is the issue it may actually be a problem in Lead Generation / Conversion, not Sales. So we don't have enough of the right leads. Why do we not have higher quality lead generation? Which ICPs (Ideal Customer Profile) are our BDRs (Business Development Representatives) targeting? Why can't we 10x our BDR team and 10x the Lead Gen? Where is conversion falling off? If it is an issue of messaging not resonating with leads, then it may actually be a miss in Product Marketing. Start asking if we are telling a unique, clear, consistent story from website to rep? What is it in 3 words, 20 seconds, 1 minute? Does this message resonate with the ICP? Do we have it built as described? If the message resonates but we don't have it built as described, then it may be a product issue. What ICP is our product management team focused on? Do we have the correct product roadmap for that ICP? What products?resonate most with the ICP? Does it work? If the problem is it isn't working reliably, the issue may be the engineering. For engineering, it becomes clearer: Is engineering shipping a great product that works? Do customers complain about downtime or bugs? At what frequency? If and only if the product works great but we still hit issues, it could be something even more fundamental: vision. If the bug is in vision, this is the most inconvenient truth. We have to start asking if we aligned on the right vision for the business in the first place. Is our ICP a valuable customer and does our product serve an important need in a?large market? If not, do we need to shift the vision in another direction? Working though this framework has been a gift that Doug shared with me and that he said I could share with everyone here on LinkedIn.
