I had the immense pleasure of spending some time with three heroes yesterday, all employees of SEW Eurodrive - Troy. To celebrate their heroism, an employee luncheon was held at SEW Eurodrive to honor the three. City of Troy, Ohio, Mayor Robin Oda and State Senator Steve Huffman, were in attendance, as well. Over a month ago, a contractor was mowing around a retention pond when the mower flipped and landed on top of the man, pinning him underwater. Jeff Godwin, happened to be outside on a break and heard a scream from the contractor before he was pinned underwater. Jeff immediately ran to offer assistance. Fellow employees on break and further from the accident, Brad Flaute and Jeff Curtis, also ran to assist. After diving into the water, it took the strength of three men to lift the submerged zero turn mower off the contractor and return him to the surface. Due to the selfless act of these individuals a man was able to return home that afternoon. Occasionally, heroes wear steel toed boots and not capes!

Happy Scanniversary - June 26, 1974, the first UPC barcode on a ten pack of Juicy Fruit gum was scanned at a Marsh's Supermarket right here in Troy, Ohio, USA. The engineers behind the creation believed there would be approximately 6,000 products using the barcode. Today. there are approximately 10 billion products using the UPC barcode. You can now visit that pack of Juicy Fruit in the National Museum of American History, Smithsonian, Washington, D.C.

Meetings in 4 European countries in 4 days...what a whirlwind. Lots of trains, planes and Uber. The City of Troy, Ohio and the Troy Development Council take a trip to Europe every two years to meet with our local industries who are headquartered in Europe. We also attempt to take the opportunity to meet with industries looking at entering American market and possibly Ohio. Monday started the week in Rouen, France with a meeting with Novacel with Richard Bréhin. Exciting things will be happening with Novacel in the future. We ended the night traveling to our next hotel in Hamont, Belgium. Tuesday Patrick Titterington and spent the morning with CONMEQ | Construction Machinery & Equipment B.V., located in Budel, Netherlands. Boris Koot spent several hours with us and we look forward to having many more discussions with Boris and his team. Tuesday afternoon/evening we traveled to Frankfurt to prepare for Wednesday's meeting. Wednesday we had a great conversation and tour with Mathias Burkert and Charlotte von Riess about Freudenberg Sealing Technologies and their 175 year history of manufacturing. Freudenberg continues to be a family owned company to this day. We were also greeted warmly by Achim Nehrenberg, of the City of Schwalmstadt, Germany. Wednesday we traveled to Copenhagen to prepare for Thursday visits. Early Thursday morning we hopped on a train and began the journey to Vaxjo, Sweden to meet with Torbj?rn Gustafsson and Micropower Group. We were able to tour their almost completed headquarters and new production facility - beautiful is an understatement. We then had lunch with team from Handelskammaren / Sydsvenska Industri- och Handelskammaren, Johan Sch?rling and Sofie Nord?nger who organized a luncheon with regional Swedish companies considering entering the United States market in the near future. Patrick and I gave a presentation of Troy, Ohio and how we and the Dayton Development Coalition, JobsOhio can assist in their efforts. We then traveled back to Copenhagen to prepare prepare for our journey home. To those in economic development reading this, I want to highly encourage you to implement a strong business retention and expansion (BR&E) program in your ED efforts; both domestic and foreign. The companies in your community could be anywhere, but they chose YOUR community. Yes, as economic development professionals we want to help them grow their employee count, footprint and cap/ex, but sometimes it is about saying, "thank you."
