As the leaves begin to change, so do the colors of returning steelhead, but their numbers are a fraction of what they once were. Due to the construction of the lower four Snake River dams, steelhead and salmon returns are the worst they’ve been in over 200 years. Act now to protect the future of Snake River salmon and steelhead: https://bit.ly/4evwc7V #SnakeWeek #NoMoreLowerFour

On the wild, coastal rivers of Washington’s Olympic Peninsula, Trout Unlimited is removing migration barriers, reconnecting floodplains and restoring critical spawning and rearing habitat for struggling populations of wild salmon and steelhead. In our new film, join TU’s Luke Kelly as he travels along iconic rainforest rivers visiting our partners and projects to celebrate the work underway and the federal infrastructure investments expanding the scale and impact of restoration on the Olympic Peninsula. For anglers and coastal Tribes, this work is critical to rebuilding wild steelhead and salmon runs. For local communities, these investments mean good jobs and durable road systems designed to withstand the impacts of a changing climate. ?? Big News! ?? Today, the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee passed bipartisan ‘Good Samaritan’ legislation that would help clean up one of the nation’s most pervasive water issues: pollution from abandoned mines. Though 40 percent of headwater streams in the West are polluted by toxic mine drainage, existing laws have made it difficult or impossible for organizations like Trout Unlimited to clean up these abandoned mine sites. Today marks a major step in signing this legislation – which passed unanimously in the Senate in August – into law. We’re thrilled to share the Apache Trout Implementation Team received the Carl R. Sullivan Fishery Conservation Award at this year’s American Fisheries Society Annual Meeting. Known as the “Sully,” this award recognizes those who have made “outstanding contributions to the conservation of fishery resources.” The recovery and delisting of Apache trout would not be possible without this team of staffers from Trout Unlimited, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS), Arizona Game and Fish Department and White Mountain Apache Tribe. Congratulations to the entire team and TU’s Dan Dauwalter, Alan Davis & Nathan Rees on incredible work and an incredible honor.

On the Klamath River, the largest dam removal effort in history has cleared the way for salmon, steelhead and lamprey to regain access to hundreds of miles of historic habitat in the watershed’s tributaries and headwaters. Throughout the Upper Basin, TU and our partners have spent years working to restore habitat and water resources for the Klamath’s communities and native Bull trout, Redband rainbows and endemic suckers. Now, with the historic opportunity to rebuild populations of returning anadromous species, we are working hard to expand the scale and impact of this critical work. In a new blog post, TU’s Chrysten Rivard reflects on the dedication that made dam removal possible, our ongoing work to give returning native fish the habitat and cold water they need, and the partnerships that make this critical work possible. Mentorship, like angling, requires patience and dedication. Just as a great angler knows the waters and the fish, a great mentor understands the people they guide, casting out with care and reeling in with purpose. Chris Wood, Trout Unlimited President and CEO, reflects on the profound impact and legacy of Coach Gerry Bellotti, a true “fisher of men”: https://bit.ly/3AXzW3N
