  • Dear TCSS Family: As we enter February, a month dedicated to celebrating Black History, I wanted to honor the remarkable contributions of African Americans throughout our nation's history. Throughout the month, Troup County School System students will have opportunities to participate in engaging classroom lessons, events, and activities designed to spotlight the importance of Black History Month. The observance of Black History Month perfectly aligns with the core values (Connections, Equity, Achievement, Resilience, Integrity, Compassion) and strategic goals (Student Success and Well-Being, Equitable Opportunities for All, Focus on High-Quality Staff, Operate as a Flexible and Adaptable Organization, Cultivate Relationships between the School System and External Partners) of the Troup County School System. Currently, 46% of our students identify as Black or African American, and by highlighting the rich history and contributions of Black Americans, we strengthen our commitment to equity and culturally responsive practices, thereby enhancing the capacity of our students. Throughout this month, we will showcase stories from our school system, sharing how students, teachers, and staff plan to recognize and celebrate Black history and culture. For updates and highlights, please visit our district website at?www.troup.org?and our social media pages. Please join me in paying tribute to the countless Black individuals who have not only transformed our Troup County community but have also played integral roles in shaping our entire nation. Their contributions and sacrifices are vitally important to all of us, and while we formally acknowledge them in February, it's crucial to remember them throughout the year. Together, let us commemorate their efforts in building a society that is free, just, and equitable for all. Thank you, Dr. Hazel, Superintendent

  • The Troup County School System (TCSS) Suprise Patrol surprised three outstanding educators with flowers and a special pendant on Thursday, January 30th, and Friday, January 31st. The surprise announcements, held at each teacher's school, revealed the teachers as finalists in the local TOTY competition. The three 2025 system finalists are: Elementary Teacher of the Year Kathey Sandiford: 5th grade writing teacher at Long Cane Elementary School. Ms. Sandiford is passionate about fostering a love of writing skills and creativity in her students. Middle School Teacher of the Year Deneshia Norman: 7th grade English Language Arts (ELA) Callaway Middle School. Ms. Norman plays a key role in helping students develop their reading comprehension, writing abilities, and critical thinking skills. High School Teacher of the Year Aidan Blackwell: 11th and 12th grade IB History of the Americas and 11th and 12th AP History at LaGrange High School. Mr. Blackwell challenges his students to think critically about the past and its impact on the present. TCSS will announce one of the three finalists as the Troup County School System Teacher of the Year and honor all school-level Teacher of the Year winners at a special reception at Oakfuskee Conservation Center in March. Quinshada Simpson from Ethel Kight Elementary is the current TCSS Teacher of the Year. She is vying for the state-level honor, which will be announced in May. #APlaceForEveryKid

  • Dr. Rachel Hazel, the Superintendent of the Troup County School System, is hosting a series of town hall meetings in September. While the town halls will take place in TCSS schools, they are open to the public. These town hall meetings come after the first month of school in the 2024-2025 academic school year. In the first two weeks of the new school year, Dr. Hazel visited with principals, teachers, students, and staff in all 20 schools. She was able to see effective and engaging learning happening in the classrooms. During the upcoming town hall meetings, Dr. Hazel will review the critical work TCSS has been doing to continue making A Place for Every Kid. Your ongoing input and commitment are essential to this process, so we hope you will join us to learn more and stay engaged. Please mark your calendars, and we look forward to seeing you there! ??
