What an amazing moment it was today as I stood in front of our hospital staff and welcomed them into the new Kenneth C. Griffin Surgical Tower at Nicklaus Children's Health System. Of all I’ve accomplished during my 15 years as a leader at Nicklaus Children’s, this moment will always hold a special place in my heart. Forty-seven years ago, at the age of four, after watching the team at what was then Variety Children’s Hospital (now Nicklaus Children’s) save my newborn brother’s life with a heroic operation, I told my parents I would grow up to be a surgeon to help children. To stand here today, knowing I have led—along with my colleague, fellow SVP, and friend Jose Perdomo —the opening of the country’s most advanced pediatric surgical tower, and to have done so as a pediatric plastic surgeon where my journey first began, is still something I find hard to believe. As I mentioned in my remarks, while the planning for this massive building started nearly four years ago, the vision did not. For the 75 years that Nicklaus Children’s Hospital has stood on this spot, all who have served here have understood our responsibility to ensure the highest quality care for children, not just for today, but for tomorrow as well. That is what we have achieved with this five-story, 131,000 square-foot surgical tower. I know that generations of children will have their lives bettered here, and I am incredibly proud to have played such a meaningful role in this chapter of our hospital’s history. Thank you to Mr. Ken Griffin, our CEO Matthew Love, our hospital president Perry Ann Reed, MBA, MS, FACHE, Board Chairs Joseph Nader, Jay Massirman, and Peter Lopez, CBRE, Brasfield & Gorrie, LLC, all the contractors and service providers, our amazing staff, and most of all our incredible patients and their families. We were excited to celebrate our team members for their work to this point on the major expansion and renovation project at UHealth Tower, the health system’s flagship hospital. From cosmetic and facade enhancements to major updates that will advance the building’s utility, functionality, and capabilities, the five-story, 138,564-square-foot tower addition will add 94 bays and 14 new ICU beds, improving the overall patient experience and allowing UHealth to continue providing exceptional patient care for our community.
