Today is #ChildrensMentalHealthAwareness Day. Research conducted in the past decade has connected a myriad of mental health risks with excessive mobile phone and internet use, particularly among adolescents and young adults. These risks include, but are not limited to: depression, anxiety, decreased sleep quality, body image issues, eating disorders, and mood changes. The Digital Safety Alliance is a partnership of national organizations that aims to rally parents, educators, healthcare providers, and policymakers to create a safer digital environment for kids. A poll conducted in the Fall of 2023 by the Pew Research Center showed that nearly three-quarters of U.S. teens say they feel "happy or peaceful" when they don’t have their phones with them. "The survey comes as policymakers and children’s advocates are growing increasingly concerned with teens’ relationships with their phones and #socialmedia. Last fall, dozens of states, including California and New York, sued Instagram and Facebook owner Meta Platforms Inc. for harming young people and contributing to the youth #mentalhealth crisis by knowingly and deliberately designing features that addict children. In January, the CEOs of Meta, TikTok, X and other social media companies went before the Senate Judiciary Committee to testify about their platforms’ harms to young people." https://lnkd.in/gxyacYa9 #youthmentalhealth #digitalsafety #onlinesafety

Child extortion groups like Group 764 exploit the platform’s features to target vulnerable youth, creating a chilling reality for online safety. One of those victims was a 14-year-old girl from Oklahoma who was persuaded by “Brad” (Bradley Cadenhead) to send a nude photo. Cadenhead immediately used this as leverage to get the young girl to live stream “degrading and violent acts."
